Always expect the best of new Spielberg films. This looks to be the kind of film that brings adults to the theater in droves. Meanwhile, Crimson Peak will bring out horror fans and Goosebumps may draw families. It should be a solid week at the box office, but I’m giving the slight edge to Bridge of Spies for the win.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Every Spielberg film needs to be seen. I’m not as excited about the film as I’m sure others are, but it will definitely be an experience.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m looking forward to Spielberg’s Cold War film, one of the major contenders in this year’s Oscar race.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like another strong Spielberg historical epic after Lincoln, but I’m hoping it doesn’t turn out to be another Amistad.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds like an interesting movie, but the trailer just does not excite me. With luck, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg will prove better than the trailer. I think there will be a lot to like, but the trailer just feels a little obvious and ham-fisted. We will see.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Guillermo del Toro’s films demand attention and the trailer oozes ambiance, so as a fan of horror films, this is a must-see.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Guillermo del Toro’s most eagerly anticipated film since Pan’s Labyrinth has Oscar potential.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a return to form for Guillermo del Toro.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer starts with a nice sense of eeriness, but then it feels like a dip towards standard ingenue trapped in a haunted house where the spirits are none too kind. Director Guillermo del Toro has a decent track record, so it may be better than the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If it weren’t for Jack Black, this might be more palatable. As it is, it could be a fun distraction, but not one I care to see in the theaters.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The Goosebumps books have been around a long time so there’s probably an audience for this, but I’m not part of it.
Tripp Burton (TB): Could be fun, but chances are this is a property that didn’t need the big screen treatment.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Actually the trailer makes this look like a lot of fun. The stories coming alive from the books, none of which I have read, could be a fairly amusing concept. Let us hope so.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another faux-spirational football pic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another inspirational sports film.
Tripp Burton (TB): Everything here makes me cringe.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may be based on a true story, but it looks like many of the uplifting sports dramas we have seen before, especially ones dealing with integration. It does not interest me at all.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t found a lot of samurai films that I love. This doesn’t look like it will be one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Taiwan’s candidate for this year’s Foreign Film Oscar looks like a long shot.
Tripp Burton (TB): Festival favorite that looks very promising.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The sets, costumes and cinematography all look first rate, but martial arts films are just not my thing. This one looks a little too slow moving to grab a truly wide audience.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The movie doesn’t look like something I want to see, but it may be a film I need to see.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Topical war drama about a child combatant in an unnamed country should be a major contender for year-end awards including Oscar.
Tripp Burton (TB): Another festival favorite, and one that we can watch at home this weekend!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a harrowing and gripping account of the life of one child soldier in Africa. It may prove difficult to watch, but it also may be a film that we all should watch.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Australian crime drama looks interesting if you can get past that horrid title.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dreadful looking teen romance is not on for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks bland, but the direction of an original West Side Story cast member could mean the dancing is at least thrilling.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Exuberant dancing and a trite story do not add up to a movie worth seeing. It looks pretty dreadful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is confused, which doesn’t make the film seem like it will be less so.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Debut directorial effort of one of Hollywood’s few female cinematographers could be a sleeper hit., but might just as easily get lost in the shuffle
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks fine, but with so many stronger films out, I’m in no rush to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Olivia Wilde is said to be great, but a trailer this ambiguous certainly does not help interest in the film. I could not really tell what it is about. Hopefully they do not waste this high powered cast.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I thought Brie Larson should have been Oscar-nominated for Short Term 12. I’m interested now to see if my opinions of her were justified.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Audience Award winner at Toronto, but not Vancouver could be a major hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): The buzz on this film is through the roof, and I can’t wait to see what I think will be one of the leading awards contenders of the year.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Brie Larson is said to be Oscar worthy in this film, though it sounds like the film itself is not quite as strong as it should be. It could make for interesting viewing, though I doubt many will want to see it twice. The acting is why one will want to see this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be interesting, but I’m not sure it will be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well received festival film about Dan Rather’s undoing at CBS could be hit or miss.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks interesting on paper, but the buzz hasn’t been great, so I’m not running to see it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): We all remember Dan Rather’s sudden fall from grace, and this film should give us a better idea of how that happened. I am not certain if I buy Robert Redford as Dan Rather, but Cate Blanchett is said to be stunning as his producer and should carry the film through its weaker spots.
