Horror films typically have strong opening weekends, but none have been more consistently above norm than the Paranormal Activity films. Expect the fourth installment to open much stronger than any other horror effort this year. Alex Cross will do well with several demographics, but won’t be able to compare favorably to the built-in appeal of frights before Halloween.

Individual Commentaries

Wesley Lovell: The week’s wide releases aren’t half as interesting as the limited ones: The Sessions is the only major Oscar contender out this weekend and it looks like am amusing trifle and earns my vote for Pick of the Week. None of the rest of the other releases inspire me, even as a horror fan (I honestly haven’t seen any of the Paranormal Activity films).
Peter J. Patrick: My pick of the week is The Sessions. Something different, this true life story of a man in an iron lung and the sexual surrogate he hires to lose his virginity has been in the national conversation since last January’s Sundance Film Festival. Now the rest of us will finally have a chance to see it. Nothing else this week piques my interests.
Tripp Burton: A couple of entries into long-running genre series and a couple of smaller films with Oscar hope opening this week. They all should be interesting enough to go check out.
