A large slate of new releases will compete to be the number one film of the weekend, with the films most likely to have a chance being Geostorm, Boo 2, and Only the Brave. Snowman could surprise, but the negative reviews will depress turnout. I would normally give the edge to the disaster film, but Only the Brave is timely and will likely draw more of an audience from middle America than the other films.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer for the first film got me interested, but I didn’t get out to see it. The trailer for this film also got me interested. So, I watched the original to get an idea of what to expect with the sequel. Suffice it to say, I was disappointed, which tempers my opinion for this film a bit.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’ve avoided Tyler Perry’s Madea films thus far, and this one doesn’t look like a good one to start with.
Tripp Burton (TB): The Madea movies have never appealed to me, but for the millions who love them this should be a good addition.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have not seen any of Tyler Perry’s Medea films, and the trailer for this one certainly didn’t encourage me to start now.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love disaster movies, so this is on my list to see, though I have my doubts that it will be worth it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The special effects look impressive, but the story looks sappy.
Tripp Burton (TB): I love disaster movies, but this looks a little over the top even to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Not content with any one destructive force, this film throws everything that mother nature has at humanity. The effects do not look that good and the acting looks worse.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I am pleased by the visual look of the film, the plot doesn’t seem that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Current events underscore the topicality of this firefighter tribute film that it might not otherwise have had.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks pandering and completely uninteresting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailers haven’t wowed me, but the reviews make it sound interesting and it is supposed to have great special effects.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This film oozes with two antiquated and excisable tropes: The White Savior trope and the Magical Negro trope. For that alone I refuse to dignify it with my attention.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast in under-the-radar film based on a true story night give it some heft.
Tripp Burton (TB): It’s nice to see Renee Zellweger pop up every now and then, but I wish she could find a worthy-looking vehicle.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Oh dear, this just looks dreadfully serious and bad.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Tomas Alfredson’s filmography has been solid, so I’m more than interested in seeing what he does with this story.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Trailer looks good, but early reviews have been largely negative including complaints that not all scenes in the trailer are in the film.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a different and intriguing thriller.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s not a bad trailer, and I like Michael Fassbender, but the reviews have been so universally negative that I do not expect much of this movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Overused plot devices rarely find unique perspectives and this doesnโ€™t look like it will be one of the good ones.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Coming-of-age drama looks strong, but might play better on home video than in theatres.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks sweet and not much else.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This will be a decent, though unexciting, film of a father and son getting over the death of their wife/mother. I have a feeling that the good cast will not elevate the film to anything extraordinary.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A story of gay men fighting for AIDS funding in France seems like a compelling history lesson, one that seems far too infreuently told for the severity of it all.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Cannes Film Festival winner about AIDS activists in Frances in the early 1990s is a strong Oscar contender for Foreign Language Film.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve been waiting for this ever since it became a hit at Cannes.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This film about activism in the fight against AIDS looks good, though I hear it is is too long.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m interested only because I found The Lobster compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m on the fence about this one only because I like the director’s previous work, but this looks really, really bad.
Tripp Burton (TB): Yorgos Lanthimos’ films are always interesting, so this should be a treat.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure what of make of this. The trailer is more perplexing than horrifying, but most of the reviews are good. I honestly don’t know if I want to see it or not.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks like a fairly rote action feature.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): South Korean thriller with supernatural overtones looks like it could be a good one.
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t know what to make of this, but it should be exciting, to say the least.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks intriguing, but I wonder if this film about victims returning to life to punish their killers will just turn into a bad horror movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Todd Haynes is one of the best working filmmakers. Although the film has received mixed notices, I’m still very interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stylistically impressive but dramatically weak seems to be the consensus on this one as is borne out by the trailers.
Tripp Burton (TB): he mixed festival buzz has me worried, but this lineup of talent should make Wonderstruck a film worth seeing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are mostly good, but the trailer does not thrill me. It may be good or it may just be indifferent.
