Looking at the Weekend: Oct. 21-23, 2016

Tom Cruise is still a big draw at the box office and the previous film in this series was popular enough they made a sequel. Compared to the other releases, it’s likely an easy victory will await Jack Reacher. Boo! A Madea Halloween could give it a run for its money, as could the pre-Halloween horror release Ouija: Origin of Evil. Keeping Up with the Joneses could be a sleeper, but I don’t think there’s been sufficient advertising for that to occur. (EDITOR’S NOTE: Thomas submitted his commentary after publication. 	Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve always had a passing interest in the Madea films, but this one looks like it might be fun. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strictly for fans of the franchise. Tripp Burton (TB): The Madea films are not my cup of tea, but to the masses out there that love them this should hit the sweet spot. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have never seen a Madea film, and I doubt that I will start with this one.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): Another self-righteous Christian drama that might be better than I anticipate, though its setting seems a bit tone-deaf. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Ludicrous, faux faith-based exploitation of Columbine tragedy. Tripp Burton (TB): This looks exploitative and in very bad taste. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a decent if generic thriller, and a step down for both star Tom Cruise and director Edward Zwick.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t seen the original, nor am I familiar with the books, so my interest in this is minimal. Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’ll have to catch up with the 2012 original before attempting to check this one out. Tripp Burton (TB): I never saw the first one, but this could be an interesting action sequel. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may be billed as a comedy, but there were very few laughs in the trailer.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s probably not going to be good, but there are some very humorous aspects to the trailer and the cast is killer. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like sophomoric nonsense to me. Tripp Burton (TB): A very funny cast could lift a tired premise. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The creepy little girl star was effective at the beginning of the trailer, but I was tired of it all by the end where it looks both over the top and incredibly lame.

Thomas LaTourette (TL): A cold trailer which does not get one excited or emotionally involved with the characters and a slew of negative reviews does not really tempt me to see this.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m intrigued, but not enough to seek it out at the theater. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well-reviewed Korean film from the director of the original Oldboy looks worth checking out. Tripp Burton (TB): Strong buzz out of Cannes makes this look like an odd but intriguing gem. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having lived in Colorado when the Columbine massacre happened, I have no desire to see this aspect of it done as a very spiritual, uplifting and sappy drama.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): A film whose trailer is quickly forgotten doesn’t sound like a movie worth watching. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Films about nitwits don’t interest me. Tripp Burton (TB): Ti West keeps playing with genre, and this could be an interesting experiment. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Early reviews praise this western, but, aside from a cute dog, the trailer sure does not excite or show anything new, though it does boast a high powered cast.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): My interest lies entirely in its festival buzz. The trailer wasn’t that interesting to me. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated Oscar contender in five major categories should be seen. Tripp Burton (TB): This is one of my most anticipated film this year! Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does it no favors, but the ecstatic reviews make this sound like one of the must sees of the season.
