Four unimpressive pictures are crowding the marketplace this weekend, one will be targeting the rich pre-Halloween audiences and the others have their niche audiences as well. None of them seem particularly strong in terms of box office potential, which means another week at number one for some other film. If any of these could breakout, it would be The Last Witch Hunter, which seems to be popular with my friends who tend to have an eye for movies that could be hits. Jem could be a spoiler, but Paranormal Activity also has potential to reverse its box office slide.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Give me the original cartoon series over this pathetic adaptation any day.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): For teen girls with aspirations of becoming video stars.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is far from my sort of thing, but those with nostalgia for the old cartoon may be excited.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks hokey, sentimental and just not very interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like an amalgam of a number of poorly-constructed fantasy pictures, making it a low priority on my list.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): For CGI addicts.
Tripp Burton (TB): The more I see this trailer, the more forgettable it becomes.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a drab, CGI laden film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve successfully avoided every film in this franchise. Nothing about this one looks likely to change that.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): For fans of low-budget horror films.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have stayed away from this series, but for fans of it, this looks to provide a handful of good scares.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have not seen any of the Paranormal Activity movies, and don’t think I have any desire to start with this one.

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I like Bill Murray, the concept just doesn’t look that fascinating.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Barry Levinson-directed Bill Murray comedy set in Afghanistan looks interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): There’s a lot of talent on this roster, but everything about this film reads misstep to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may be okay, but it looks more like a waste of Bill Murray’s talents.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Poor production quality and a premise that’s unnecessarily confusing makes this a no-go for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Derivative looking crime thriller.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is a great premise, but it looks like the execution may leave much to be desired.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Bad chase scenes do not make this look enticing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Bradley Cooper has surely done better and this doesn’t look like one of his upper-tier films.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Comedies about restaurants don’t usually do well, but this one has enough star power to be an exception.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m a sucker for food movies, and with this pedigree, this could be an entertaining diversion.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Bradley Cooper looks well cast as a bad acting celebrity chef, but I am not certain the rest of the movie will be as good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer makes this look like a hackneyed film with nothing particularly new to say, which is a bit disappointing considering the subject matter.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Award-winning Ethiopian drama with an intriguing story could be a sleeper.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very interesting, but I will wait for streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a powerful movie about feminism and tradition in Ethiopia, though it also looks a little heavy handed.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): If you have nothing better to do on Halloween you might check this out.
Tripp Burton (TB): I hadn’t heard of this until just now, and it looks very cool. I wonder why it is so far under-the-radar?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not certain the world needs an animated version of the top hits of Edgar Allen Poe, but at least the differing styles for the stories could make it interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A chance to see Sarah Silverman doing dramatics, it could be compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a cable TV drama.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard some good things from the festival circuit, but this may not be getting enough attention to get it into awards season.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Sarah Silverman is said to give a strong performance in a mediocre movie. It’s a pity that the movie lets her down.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If I could figure out what the film is really about, it might seem more interesting than it currently looks.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Frantic looking comedy-drama that seems to go off the deep end halfway through.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a neat little film, and I mean that as a compliment.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A movie about a gay couple trying to have a baby should interest me more, but the trailer makes it look like the film could not decide to be comic, heartwarming or serious, which could be an issue with.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be cute in a way that all Bollywood films look cute, but I won’t go out of my way to see it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bollywood comedy will probably come and go quicker than you can say the name.
Tripp Burton (TB): Bollywood isn’t my favorite of film types, but it certainly has its fans.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A typical Bollywood style film with over the top emotions and musical numbers might be worth seeing just for the production, but it looks like a lame love story.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): A film that seems like it should have been filmed in the 1930s is long overdue, but will it be any good?
Tripp Burton (TB): This is one of my most anticipated awards contenders, and I think it is going to be a big player this winter!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks to be a pretty interesting movie. Hope it lives up to the excitement of the trailer.
