Although Johnny English Strikes Again was originally slated as a wide release, it’s opening on 500 screens, which is limited. That leaves Hunter Killer to fight for number one against the second weekend (and weekend before Halloween) for Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween. While horror usually drops precipitously in its second weekend, a $30 million weekend will still likely top Hunter Killer, which doesn’t look like a blockbuster in the making.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This submarine action thriller doesn’t look terribly thrilling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Standard Cold War submarine drama doesn’t seem to offer anything new.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Lots of macho posturing and explosions in this film. If you want a decent plot, look elsewhere.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first Johnny English film wasn’t very funny and this doesn’t look like it improves on anything.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I skipped the first two, will surely skip this one as well.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I like Rowan Atkinson, but this looks like a pretty lame movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I’m curious about what the mystery is at the heart of this film, I can certailny wait to catch it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Chang-dong’s first film since Poetry might be another winner but the trailer makes it hard to tell.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is enigmatic, both intriguing and sort of dull, but the early reviews are strong for this import, so it might be worth a look.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The cast isn’t bad, but the premise and trailer don’t make it terribly appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Katy Perry’s music video director does a film – and comes up with a stinker.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not generate excitement and the reviews tend towards awful. This sounds like one to skip.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Dario Argento original is a horror masterpiece and while I’ve heard that this remake isn’t as good, I can’t help but anticipate it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a rather dull remake of the 1977 classic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The original has a cult following, but this looks likely to lose even them let alone bring new fans into the fold.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Susan Sarandon doesn’t deserve my attention, not that this film looks that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Under-the-radar thriller with Susan Sarandon looking at least 30 years younger than her 72 years.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The movie should provide a good role for Susan Sarandon, but I am not sure that there will be more to see than her performance. It feels like it is lacking the heart of 1982’s Missing.
