Absence makes the heart grow fonder and with so many years between the final Saw and this reboot may be enough to help people forget the long slide into awfulness the series had become. That should give it enough boost to reign supreme over the Halloween weekend box office. None of the rest of the films seem like they could do much in terms of box office, better yet top Jigsaw.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As a fan of the first few films, the franchise declined tremendously in later years with an occasional blip. This reboot/sequel doesn’t have enough information out there in order to judge whether it’s another waste of time or a return to form.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I thought these tasteless Saw movies were a thing of the past. Sorry to see they’re not.
Tripp Burton (TB): Shockingly, I’ve never seen any of the Saw movies. I don’t think this is the one that will change that.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s not my type of film, and nothing about the trailer entices me to go.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): George Clooney’s period comedy should be a nice distraction.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A mid-level Coen Bros. comedy directed by George Clooney that they liked in Venice, but not Toronto. Hmmm.
Tripp Burton (TB): I know that the word from the festivals isn’t good, but with this pedigree, I still want to check this out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is confusing but entertaining, but the reviews make it sound like a total misfire.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have little interest in this film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong PTSD narrative may make this an important film, but will audiences make it another American Sniper size hit?
Tripp Burton (TB): This is not my sort of film at all.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Another film of a vet dealing with PTSD upon his return. It could be good, but the trailer left me cold.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It just doesn’t look as interesting as it wants to.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Old-fashioned woman’s film looks like the dregs of the genre as restored sight allows wife to really “see” her husband.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very bizarre, but it might be bizarre enough that makes it worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer tries to be too arty and dispels the eeriness and unease that the film hopes to project.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There is no reason for this film to exist and that it’s been pushed off for over a year suggests it’s not worth your time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This thing was filmed at least 3 years ago. It should have gone straight to video. Time to burn the house and the franchise.
Tripp Burton (TB): Another horror series that seems to be going on too long.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’ve never seen any of the Amityville films, and I am certainly not starting with this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a painfully unfunny, sexist comedy.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Released on iTunes a month ago, this low-level comedy has probably already been seen by anyone who cares about it.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks abysmal, and I don’t say that lightly.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It might actually be funny. The leads work well with each other and the dialogue seems good, but I am still worried that it will be just another people behaving badly film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A fascinating premise and a potential Oscar contender make for an interesting option.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Swiss entry in the Oscar race looks intriguing – who knew Swiss women were still fighting for the right to vote in 1971?
Tripp Burton (TB): Sometimes it’s nice to remember that they make these treacly films in all languages.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This look at Switzerland’s late entry into women’s right should be good if not terribly groundbreaking.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film looks a little dire, which won’t mean that it’s a bad film, but without an Oscar nomination, I can’t muster enough interest to watch it anytime soon.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a compelling, if depressing, look at life in modern Congo. Worth catching up with on home video.
Tripp Burton (TB): I haven’t seen enough African cinema, and this looks like an interesting film to help delve into.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Life in Kinshasa looks bleak for Fรฉlicitรฉ, but the striking images of life there could make for an interesting film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Not a fan of this type of film, but it’s gotten solid early notices, so it might be worth it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Melissa Leo as a vey bad nun seems to be the saving grace of this film that appears to be based on the first part of The Nun’s Story.
Tripp Burton (TB): I hadn’t heard anything about this, but it looks very interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A fierce portrayal by Melissa Leo leads this film about life in the church and ability or inability to adapt to change. It looks pretty good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s something about this comedy that seems most interesting, but the trailer is too confusing at times and a let down at others.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): They gave it the top prize at Cannes, but that doesn’t mean American audiences will like it. It looks kind of silly.
Tripp Burton (TB): The current Palme d’Or winner looks like a must-see.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I don’t get the trailer, but early reviews have made it sound like something worth seeing.
