Hotel Transylvania will have to settle for a single week at the top of the box office as both new movies this week (Frankenweenie and Taken 2) will no doubt trump it at the box office. The big question is which film will take the top spot. Part of me wants to say that Tim Burton’s brand is still strong, but after the falter of Dark Shadows earlier this year, I can’t really say that’s true. And while family audiences sated their thirst on Adam Sandler’s animated film last weekend, not enough time has eclipsed between the two family-targeted films, which may depress some of Frankenweenie‘s audience share. That leaves Taken 2, a sequel to the hit Liam Neeson action film that put the actor on the long list of box office legendaries.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Frankenweenie: Dyed in the wool Tim Burton fans will undoubtedly be excited about this. Others might not be.
Taken 2: If you loved the first one, by all means see its sequel. If you didn’t care, don’t bother.
Butter: Depending on your level of interest in satire, this could be the movie for you.
The Paperboy: Reviews weren’t great when this film made its festival debut, but it still seems to be hanging around, so who knows.

Thoughts

I wrote off Tim Burton films after Sweeney Todd and confirmed my dislike of his output after Alice in Wonderland. Nothing about Frankenweenie makes me waver on that position.

Thoughts

Tim Burton’s latest comedy horror animated flick looks like a charmer.

Thoughts

I am over the Tim Burton obsession, but for some reason the Academy isn’t.

Thoughts

Why this is even a film is beyond me, but since I had no desire to see the original, I will continue my lack of desire with not seeing the sequel.

Thoughts

Hated the first one, no intention of seeing the same thing re-heated.

Thoughts

Neither Oscar nor I caught up with the first one, so we will both skip this one too.

A good cast and a cute premise combine with a funny trailer to make a film that I’m interested in seeing, but can wait until DVD to see it.

Thoughts

Looks like a low rent State Fair to me.

Thoughts

A great ensemble could make this entertaining, but Oscar won’t even realize it existed

Lee Daniels’ anticipated follow up to Precious doesn’t look that interesting. It even has a decent cast, but that’s not enough to sell me on it.

Thoughts

Strictly for those who can’t wait to see Nicole Kidman peeing on Zac Efron.

Thoughts

It isn’t getting a lot of buzz, but Lee Daniels could see a return to the Oscars if the reviews are good enough.
