The battle for the top spot at the box office is going to be fierce, but a comic book adaptation is far more likely to top it than a romantic drama starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. That said, both films will do incredibly good box office respectively. Venom is the first antihero in the Sony expanded Marvel universe to get his own film. While the film was initially meant to be R-Rated, it’s been scaled back to PG-13, which means more audiences can watch it legally. That said, it may come as a disappointment to those who expect something a bit bolder from a character like Venom. On the other side of the coin is the fourth film to carry the title A Star Is Born. Cooper steps behind the camera as well as in front of it alongside one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. That combination, with all of the stellar reviews, should bolster its box office quite high for opening weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The reviews are terrific and I love Lady Gaga, so I’m definitely sold.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m a bit skeptical, but early word is it is the best version yet of the perennial show biz cautionary tale.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure that the world needed another remake of this film, but the reviews are very good even if the trailer is lackluster.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Although I’m reticent to believe that Sony can do better than the dreck its put out to date for Marvel, I have hope because of Tom Hardy
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’d pretty much given upon Marvel adaptations, but this horror film looks like it might be a cut above most.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like the weakest Marvel movie in some time, lots of violence without much redeeming plot.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a tepid comedy.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low wattage con man comedy doesn’t look very appealing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The premise could make for either a good chase caper or a funny film, but the trailer made it all look dull and uninteresting.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Adaptation of a young adult novel about racial injustice has gotten early raves.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer was not that interesting, but the early reviews make it sound like a worthwhile film.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Doesn’t look like a trip worth taking.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer shows the potential for this to be a fun sleeper hit, though it could be yet another dull road trip film.

Wesley Lovell (WL): Conceptually, this could be really good, but the trailers aren’t great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Poorly reviewed biopic of drug lord Pablo Escobar looks like one to avoid.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks exciting if a little confusing, but the early reviews are not kind, so it may not be worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks a bit corny.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Social drama dance movie with a tired premise doesn’t excite me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Refusing to sell a building to stop gentrification, hmm. It reminds me of Herbie Rides Again from Disney studios in 1974, and the story does not appear that updated.
