With a weak weekend last, there’s little question that Blade Runner 2049 will top the box office. The question is how big it will be. Topping $100 million doesn’t seem out of the question at this point, though the tough-selling sci-fi elements might hinder its approach to that number. That said, there’s no question it will be a big open that will likely keep it at the top for two weeks.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The talent involved alone should be enough to draw me to it, but the film looks fascinating from a visual point of view and the original is a classic, so of course I’m interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Eagerly anticipated sequel to the 1982 classic has a built-in audience of millions.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not as wild on the original film as many film lovers are, but this sequel at least looks incredible.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I can’t claim to understand the trailer, but early reviews are almost unanimously raves. It sounds like the movie of the week by far.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Idris Elba and Kate Winslet are both talented, but this looks far too familiar.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Survival film with two great actors should be compelling.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like not my cup of tea.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has better paid actors and better production values than Walking Out, but I am not certain that it will be the better film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Not a chance.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m always wary of a film that calls itself “The Movie”, but this looks dizzily bad.
Tripp Burton (TB): Somehow my kids have not realized this is coming out yet, and I’m hoping to keep it that way.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I know I am not the target audience for this one, but boy it looks bad. When an animated film is so pushing their voice talent, I think it shows that they do not think much of their film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premise isn’t well explained and thus my interest in the film is minimal to non-existent.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Barren looking sci-fi drama of little interest.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have no idea what to make of this film, but it could be an interesting one to keep an eye on.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Humanoids and humans in a frozen world. If I had not read the description of the movie, I would not have understood the trailer, which is not a good sign.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Florence Henderson and Pam Grier are the only reasons this film has rated as high as it has.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Florence Henderson will be remembered long after this trifle is forgotten.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a dreadful, poor tribute to Florence Henderson.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Although it might be fun to see the late Florence Henderson in a totally different type of role, the trailer did not have many laughs to it.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Loathsome looking horror comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard this is a clever little film, and I’ll check it out when it’s streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Most of the early reviews are good, but the horror/comedy trailer did not make me laugh or flinch.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unappealing looking Chinese comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have no idea what to make of this, but I don’t think I want to either.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not certain that China is ready to be making comedies. The trailer certainly does not make a case for it.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): One of the year’s most highly anticipated films should be an art-house hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is one of my most anticipated films of awards season, and I’ve heard it doesn’t disappoint.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a charming tale of childhood, boosted by a strong performance by Willem Dafoe, who will be nominated for an Oscar for it.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast could overcome what looks to be weak material in this overheated melodrama.
Tripp Burton (TB): This was a powerful piece to see on stage, but I’m not sure how well it will translate to the screen.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The play may lose some impact opened up for the screen, but it looks to be a searing drama with strong performances.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Matt Bomer is the only reason I have any interest in this and that’s just not enough.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Father-son adventure film looks like a tamer version of The Revenant.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m getting tired of the lost in the snow movie genre.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A father and son hunting trip goes awry. The scenery looks beautiful and the performances decent, but I am not sure that it is not anything we haven’t seen before.
