Competing for the crown this weekend will be the second weekend of The Martian and the first weekend of family-friendly Pan. While I’d like to give Matt Damon and Ridley Scott the upper hand, the vibrancy of Pan seems like a safer bet.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A deconstruction of the Peter Pan mythos that turns the tale in different directions? The trailers doesn’t make it look that great, but I’m sure it will be a hit.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A flop TV presentation, a struggling Broadway musical, a Blu-ray release of the old Mary Martin version and now this, I’m Peter Panned out and so, probably, are most audiences.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m getting tired of all of the prequels and re-imaginings we are stuck with.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The previews of this film leave me absolutely cold. It looks like an overblown effects laden mess, though maybe there will be some heart to it. I am very dubious.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be fun just to see Whoopi Goldberg acting again, but that’s about the only thing that could get me to watch this movie.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hokey looking comedy with a delayed release doesn’t look too promising.
Tripp Burton (TB): I heard about this movie for the first time just last night, and it looks horrible.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For such a well known cast, this movie is flying under the radar. Hopefully it will be better than the typical small town with a big secret film, but I am not certain of that. The cast alone could make it worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As a horror enthusiast, I love when films astutely poke fun at the genre. Hopefully, this is more like Tucker & Dave vs. Evil and not The Cabin the Woods.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Horror movie parodies are so yesterday, or are they?
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks like an amusing enough horror comedy, but I’ll wait until it’s on TV one night to catch it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like a step above the typical slasher movie with some nice plot twists, but I still doubt I will see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks like a dumb Spanish-language heist comedy with no genuine originality.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Latin American heist comedy promises something different for a change.
Tripp Burton (TB): Not my cup of tea, but could be interesting for its target audience.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This Mexican import looks like a bad comic heist movie. The trailer certainly does not inspire me to see more.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): One of the year’s prime Oscar contenders makes this one a must watch.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Film festival breakout hit should be a major Oscar contender in major categories.
Tripp Burton (TB): I loved Alex Gibney’s latest doc on Jobs, and I’m not sure I need this, but with the talent involved I’ll be curious enough to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Oscar does like biographies, and this sounds like a good one. With accolades for the actors and probably a very strong screenplay, this is one to see.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept is interesting, but the trailer doesn’t provide enough impetus to want to see it in the theater.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): German thriller looks intriguing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks tedious to me, but the buzz is OK from the festival circuit.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This German import promises to be more than the stunt of filming all of it in one take. It sounds like a truly different take on a night that goes places the protagonist does not expect.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer doesn’t make it look like much more than a loose fancy for a quiet Sunday afternoon at home on television.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Greece’s submission for this year’s Foreign Film Oscar could be a breakout hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): Could be fun!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is not that exciting, but the story of two boys trying to find their father could be better than it looks. The fact that Greece is submitting it for the Oscar gives me some hope that it is worth them doing that.
