Could M. Night Shyamalan rise to the top of the box office for the first time in a long while? I doubt it. His horror film hasn’t gotten nearly enough press and The Perfect Guy looks more likely to triumph at the box office than anything else.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks blatantly manipulative, which isn’t my thing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The film with the worst trailer of the year so far has to be a shoo-in for the Razzies, right?
Tripp Burton (TB): This is very far from my thing, but I know there are lots of people out there who will love it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Another religious movie that just does not sound good. I will pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This taut psychological drama looks like it could be quite engaging, which is a lot more than I can say for a lot of recent releases.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The best looking of the week’s wide releases doesn’t mean much considering the competition.
Tripp Burton (TB): Could be an interesting enough thriller, but I’ll wait until I can watch it at home for free.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A love triangle that doesn’t sound like it covers any new ground.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): How many times do you have to be burned by a director to stop giving him chances? Audiences haven’t quite figured that out yet, but I certainly have.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): M. Night Shyamalan has made so many turkeys since The Sixth Sense it’s possible even the Razzies won’t pay attention.
Tripp Burton (TB): I keep hoping that M. Night Shyamalan will return to form, but this doesn’t look to be the film that does it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): M. Night Shyamalan did some good work, but not lately, and this looks to continue that run.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m torn. The trailer doesn’t look that interesting, but the premise does.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Slight looking but potentially interesting French coming of age film.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like it could go either way, depending on how they stick to an interesting idea.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This French film sounds like it starts slow, but picks up steam. Could be worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I love some of Zhang Yimou’s films, this one looks a bit shakier than his more stylized martial arts epics.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another winner for director Zhang Yimou and star Gong Li.
Tripp Burton (TB): This doesn’t look like his best film, but I’ll always give Zhang Yimou the benefit of the doubt.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This should be a beautiful, if depressing film, as most of Yimou Zhangโ€™s are.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): By the looks of it, why didn’t this go directly to video?
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sci-fi thriller from a first-time director and no-name cast could surprise.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like it just may miss the mark.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has an interesting premise, but I am not certain that the unknown writer/director and cast will be able to pull it off.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like it might be a surprisingly sweet little romantic comedy.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another dumb looking rom-com, will likely go straight to DVD and streaming.
Tripp Burton (TB): I like Leslye Headland’s writing, so I’m curious to see what she will do with this great premise.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like a flawed if funny comedy. It boasts a strong cast which is perhaps not well used, but it may have at least strived for more.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Oren Moverman’s debut feature was surprisingly good and this one could be too. With a star like Richard Gere and a premise like homelessness, it has a lot of room to be great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Decent looking Richard Gere star-driven film about homelessness.
Tripp Burton (TB): Owen Moverman is always an interesting filmmaker, so this should be worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A miscast Richard Gere in a tedious, if heartfelt, movie. It may have been a labor of love for the director, but it does not sound like it succeeds

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer does a decent job making this look like an animal lovers kind of movie, but the historical drama elements don’t seem nearly as well advertised.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): China’s official entry into this year’s Foreign Film Oscar race looks impressive.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have no interest in animal movies, but many others may enjoy this!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Not many films are set in Inner Mongolia, so this might be worth seeing just for that. It sounds like an interesting take on the encroachment of civilization on the wild.
