With the potency of It at the box office, a second weekend atop the charts would not be unexpected. There is another horror release that’s been heavily advertised that’s on the release schedule this week and with its competition, it would be a safe bet to put it at the top of the new releases. That said, topping the second weekend of It would be shocking. Even at a staggering 67% drop, It would take in $38 million and I think it would be a stretch to believe mother! will make that much. Noah was Darren Aronofsky’s best opening to date at $43 million, so it’s possible, though unlikely it will open that high. This week’s runner-up will be American Assassin, which doesn’t seem to have the kind of attention that makes for a blockbuster debut. All I See Is You also releases, but it hasn’t had any advertising done and I doubt it even opens near the top 10.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be decent, but it looks like too many other such films.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine looking thriller from a best-seller should have a built-in audience.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks generic and uninteresting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This mostly looks like a revenge fantasy with a few modern day twists thrown in. I have no desire to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first trailer wasn’t great, but the second trailer reeled me in.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Psychobabble mumbo jumbo is not my cup of tea, but I am probably in the minority.
Tripp Burton (TB): Aronofsky is usually not my favorite filmmaker but this looks eerie and powerful.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have had mixed reactions to Darren Aronofsky films in the past. This one does not really excite me, though Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance sounds interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be some of Ben Stiller’s best work in some time, which might make it worth catching.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Comedy centered around a mid-life crisis could be entertaining if properly handled. I’m not sure this is.
Tripp Burton (TB): I tend to like Mike White’s films, but the buzz on this doesn’t make it sound good.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A father reflecting back on his college days and what he has or has not done since could make a better film with a sharper script and director. This appears to miss the mark. It does look like Ben Stiller gives a decent performance.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Nicolas Cage, as the lead, is one of the reasons the film looks weaker than it should.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another Nic Cage potboiler.
Tripp Burton (TB): Another horrible looking Nicolas Cage vehicle.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): If American Assassin is a revenge fantasy on a global scale, this is one on a local level. It looks foul, unpleasant an implausible.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The talent alone might be worth the price of admission.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast seems poised to elevate standard family comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): A cast like this should be able to make anything worth watching.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For such a big name cast, this film is certainly slipping in under the radar. Hijinks ensue at a wedding, but a lot of it looks predictable.
