As much as I want to predict the young adult title taking the box office, Johnny Depp in a capital-A Acting performance should be just what the box office ordered after weeks of weak debuts. It has the makings of a sizable hit.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This will be the first of the major end-of-year Oscar contenders to release wide, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to check it out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): First commercial release of awards season should be a box-office smash.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a slog to me, but the festival reviews are strong and Johnny Depp is a box office draw.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like a well made film about a not very nice person. I wish I was more excited about it than I am, but Depp should have one of his better roles in years.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another clichรฉ-riddled Christian-oriented melodrama. Not for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Overused title could mean confusion at the box office for this thriller from a veteran director with a not very good track record.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a bland thriller to watch late at night on cable.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Even with a decent cast, this sounds like a bad uplifting film. I will be passing on it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I found the first movie fascinating, so I’m with it for the long haul.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The original was OK, but nothing special. I don’t expect anything more from the sequel.
Tripp Burton (TB): This isn’t my favorite series, but if you’re a fan, this could be exciting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having not seen the first picture, I have no interest in catching a sequel in another dystopian sci-fi series.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a middle of the road attempt to cash in on the transgender movement that has mostly good intentions, but doesn’t seem that well executed.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I could be wrong, but the important subject matter (female to male transition) seems to be reduced here to the level of a Lifetime TV movie.
Tripp Burton (TB): I can’t tell how this will turn out, but the premise and talent are intriguing enough.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could have been a good movie, but it sounds like it does not succeed. Given the time, a movie about an F-to-M trans teen should be getting more interest than it is. A good cast will help, but bad direction will probably sink it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): My dislike of falling will make this a tough sit, but the film looks like it could have a lot of fun dramatics even if the trailer makes it look like it has a lot of crappy dialogue.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This exciting-looking film about a real-life doomed climb to the summit of Mt. Everest is one of the few films I’d actually like to see in 3-D
Tripp Burton (TB): My severe fear of heights will keep me away, but this looks very well made.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): If nothing else, this should be a visually exciting film about the doomed Everest expedition of 1996. Everyone knows the basic storyline, but it still should be thrilling to watch.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Bollywood isn’t really my thing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Frenetic looking Hindi comedy doesn’t look like it would be good in any language.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a prime example of a film that would be ridiculed in English but is given a free pass because it is “foreign.”
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A confusing trailer does not make this that appealing, though one imagines the heartbreaker and the heartbroken will manage to work it out in the end.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m interested from a historical perspective, but the film doesn’t look like it’s going to be exceptionally good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking biographical drama of Bobby Fischer could herald a return to grace for both Ed Zwick and Tobey Maguire.
Tripp Burton (TB): I find this trailer very intriguing, and can’t wait to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This film should be better than the previews make it look, as Bobby Fisher, chess and the Cold War may not lend themselves to cinematic brilliance but they should still be fairly riveting. Tobey Maguire continues to impress.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Emily Blunt has been making some very strong selections recently and, one day, the Academy will take notice.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Could this be Emily Blunt’s entry into the Oscar races? Time will tell.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve been eagerly awaiting this since Cannes, and can’t wait to see what Villeneuve does with this idea.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like a grim but interesting take on the Mexico to America drug trade. With strong performances, this could be worth seeing.

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like direct-to-video tedium.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Seems to be a Dirty Dozen retread, but with such an unappealing title, will anyone care?
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t give 1’s out very often, but this looks abysmal.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This should be one of the worst WWII films of recent years.
