With so few kid-targeted adventures this year, the presence of Jack Black and Cate Blanchett should elevate the film’s chances to a solid opening weekend and definitely a presence at the top of the box office. Life Itself won’t be much competition, but Fahrenheit 11/9 could be a surprisingly strong documentary performer. After all, Michael Moore’s similarly titled Fahrenheit 9/11 was one of the most popular documentaries in cinema history.

Our Highest Rated Films: Fahrenheit 11/9; Colette; The House with a Clock In Its Walls; The Sisters Brothers

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Fahrenheit 9/11 was a hell of a film, but this doesn’t feel as important.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): May be something new for those who don’t watch CNN or MSNBC – for those of us who do, there isn’t.
Tripp Burton (TB): How much you like this movie will probably depend on your patience for Michael Moore; I can’t wait.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have mixed feelings about Michael Moore, but this sounds like one of his better efforts in years. The early reviews are surprisingly good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There haven’t been nearly as many kid-friendly films this year and fewer still that seem modestly appealint to adults like this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking kids’ film.
Tripp Burton (TB): My kids are excited for this, but the trailers leave me cold every time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is moody and a little humorous, but does not do a great job of grabbing one’s attention.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a fairly generic ensemble drama.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a dullish waste of a good cast.
Tripp Burton (TB): The Toronto buzz for this wasn’t good, and it looks like treacle to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a great cast is lost in a mawkish movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It appears to be a poorly acted drama about older motorcycle riders going on one last journey.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Doesn’t look like much of anything.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have little patience for motorcycle movies, and this looks miserable.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Old men doing a last big motorcycle trip, it’s been done before and prob ably much better.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is somewhat interesting, but there’s not enough information presented in it to make it ultimately appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a whole bunch of nothing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The premise sounds really good, but the trailer looks exploitative rather than intriguing or deep.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The subject matter might make this a film to see, though the trailer doesn’t give much hope that it will be that great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Keira Knightley has a long shot at winning the Oscar as the celebrated French author.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a great vehicle for Keira Knightley, and I’m excited for it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A rather dull trailer does not excite about a writer whose life was very interesting, but the early reviews make it sound like a decent film.

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another Asian martial arts film that doesn’t appeal to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): South Korean historical drama looks monotonous.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks miserable in any language.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer has some good imagery, but the lack of cohesiveness and jerky style do not make me want to s ee this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Early word is strong, but the trailer doesn’t appeal to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Trailer looks rather bland but early critical reception has been good, so who knows?
Tripp Burton (TB): I love a good Western and this looks fantastic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Early reviews are good for this revisionist western, and it boasts an interesting cast, but the trailer just makes it look stupid rather than watchable.
