While Kingsman: The Secret Service was a surprise hit, its opening weekend was roughly $20 million off the weekend opener of the previous Lego animation entry. The Lego Ninjago Movie isn’t likely to perform to The Lego Batman Movie‘s $53 million opening and Kingsman: The Golden Circle is sure to top its predecessor’s $36 million, but will that be enough to get Kingsman on top of Lego. With little family fare at the box office and Kingsman‘s R rating, I suspect that Lego will win the weekend, but not by a wide margin.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A horror film absent a compelling hook isn’t worth experiencing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another schlocky horror cheapie.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like something different but it still doesn’t intrigue me too much.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a bad horror movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first film interested me, but I didn’t catch up on it until this year. Now, I’m more than excited to check the sequel out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I didn’t care for the original and this looks like more of the same, but if you liked it, go for it.
Tripp Burton (TB): I never saw the first one, and this trailer reminded me why.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The first film was not that good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Lego-branded movies so far have been pretty good, though this one is set in a universe that hasn’t particularly piqued my interests in the past, so I’m lukewarm about the potential.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I liked the first LEGO movie and this one seems to be in the same tongue-in-cheek style.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve liked the Lego movies so far, but this doesn’t look quite as clever as the other two.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The first two Lego films were fun, so one hopes this one will be as well.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t disliked an Emma Stone performance yet, so I’m marginally excited to see this. Steve Carell on the other handโ€ฆ
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I usually find Steve Careel’s acting as cringe-worthy as the real-life Bobby Riggs he’s playing, so I’m not sure this will work for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): The buzz from the festivals has made this a must-see for me, on top of a great story with a top-notch cast.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like an enjoyable if over-the-top telling of the Bobby Riggs/Billie Jean King tennis match. It looks to be good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It has an interesting hook, so it could be at least a modestly entertaining production.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’d rather re-watch The Most Dangerous Game or The Naked Prey than sit thorough this latest take on the same subject matter.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting enough horror film, but I’m not going to rush out and see it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a distasteful film, based on a city sanctioned hunt of people.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): That trailer was about as a miserable a thing you could get, a terrible attempt to entice an audience without any real enticement.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Last year’s Foreign Language Film submission from Norway about that country’s invasion by the Nazis looks interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard good things from some film festivals, but this looks like a complete bore to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This should be a gripping film about a bit of WWII history that most of us do not know. The trailer was not the most understandable, but I think it will be good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Early reviews have suggested Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance is tremendous, so that’s all the film has going for it to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance looks to make this a much more satisfying film than last year’s already forgotten one about the Boston Marathon bombing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This could be an interesting variation on the Oscar bait film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Strong performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany should anchor this fact-based film that looks very good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This jus doesn’t look like a good movie.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Fish out of water comedy about an Indian immigrant in Chicago looks like it could be fun.
Tripp Burton (TB): This doesn’t look horrible, but it doesn’t look too enticing either.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It might prove to be a decent fish out of water comedy, but the trailer makes me think it won’t be that good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m getting a little tired of the Judi Dench aging monarch schtick. I loved Mrs. Brown, but this seems to be taking things too far.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Queen Victoria in her later years looks like another triumph for Stephen Frears and another awards magnet for Judi Dench.
Tripp Burton (TB): The buzz for this isn’t great, outside of the always reliable Judi Dench.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Judi Dench may well get a second Oscar nomination for playing Queen Victoria, though the reviews were not that great at the film festivals. Dame Dench does look like she is having fun in the role.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like odd, but this film doesn’t look like engaging oddity.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Angst-ridden drug drama looks too mopey-dopey for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): Kirsten Dunst is one of those actresses whom I will watch in anything!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Early reviews are not kind and except for watching Kirsten Dunst, there may not be much of a reason to see this film.
