Two of the hottest names at the box office, Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, headline the weekends surefire number one film: The Magnificent Seven based on the American remake of the Japanese classic The Seven Samurai, this film hopes to cash in on name recognition to solidify its monetary potential since the genre, western, hasn’t been that popular lately. It will have solid competition from Storks, the first viable family-targeted film at the box office since mid-August and the biggest potential money maker for animated films since The Secret Life of Pets in July.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There are actors in the film that I like, but the advertising has left me frustrated and ill-prepared to want to see the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another remake of a remake that we didn’t need.
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t really need another retelling of this story, especially one that doesn’t seem to bring anything new to the table except louder effects.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a tepid and unnecessary remake.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The humor is mostly crass and self-serving and even the one originalg gag in the trailer isn’t sufficient to make me want to see this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Do parents still tell their kids that storks bring babies?
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like painful kiddie fare…and even my kids aren’t interested in seeing it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a decent animated film, but nothing that exciting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An interesting aesthetic, but it’s ultimately a film I’m not that compelled to want to see.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Atmospheric Korean film set in the 1920s is at least something different.
Tripp Burton (TB): This got mixed reviews from Toronto, so I’ll wait to see if it picks up more buzz.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer for this film about the Korean underground fighting their Japanese occupiers does not excite that much, but early reviews are strong.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I like the leads in this French langauge film, the production seems overbearing in many places.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m not opposed to yet another version of my all-time favorite fairy tale, but this one has too much CGI for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks pretty enough, but I’m nervous that it took over two years to open over here.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks visually stunning yet incredibly stupid. It probably would have been better left to Disney to make.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It has a certain We Need to Talk About Kevin feel without the absolute unrepentant evil.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Canadian coming-of-age film looks interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting take on the teenager film, but I’ll wait until it is streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An odd trailer does not really make me want to see this, but the early reviews found this to be a very original coming out story, so hopefully they have it right.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If there’s a reason to see the film, it’s the stars. If there’s a reason not to see the film, it’s the weak trailers.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Award-winning Australian film might have been a player at last year’s Oscars, but seems to have fallen under the radar now.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ll see Kate Winslet in anything, but this looks painfully dull.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’m not totally sure what this movie wants to be, but high fashion in the Australian outback and a shirtless Liam Hemsworth make it a movie that might be worth seeing.

Wesley Lovell (WL): It certainly looks Disney-fied, but that doesn’t keep it from looking fresh and charming.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Inspirational Ugandan set true story could be a breakout hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a very well-made inspirational film, and we don’t see many of those these days.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An uplifting drama set in Uganda, could be interesting or it could be the typical Disney schmaltz.
