Of the week’s new releases only the animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 looks like a hit in the making. The original opened to $42 million and finished off just shy of $150 million. Nancy Myers’ combination of Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway isn’t likely to come close, but The Intern could come in a much lower second place ahead of the second weekend of The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart form Hostel, nothing Eli Roth has ever done has seemed that interesting to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This blight on the rainforest looks like it should have stayed inside “the twisted mind of Eli Roth.”
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not an Eli Roth fan, but his fans will probably eat this one up
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Not being into gruesome horror films, this one has no interest for me at all.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I had no desire to see the original, so the sequel is definitely out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The original was OK, but did we really need a sequel?
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks pedestrian, but I’ve never seen the original, so maybe I’m missing something.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The first film was fun, so hopefully this one will be as well, though sequels have a habit of not being as good as the first film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ll admit the trailer has charm and with Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro on board, so am I.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a good light comedy for De Niro and Hathaway fans.
Tripp Burton (TB): This also looks very pedestrian, but the combination of Hathaway and De Niro could pay out a little
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The charisma of the two leads should carry this film for awhile, but it will probably end up being a rather mediocre film. Nancy Meyers only has a so-so record as writer/producer, and this looks like it will fall firmly into that average range.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It was on the festival circuit in 2014. If it were anything worthy of consideration, it would have been in the thick of the Oscar race last year, but it wasn’t.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Contemporary family drama should do well on DVD, not sure how it will fare at the box-office.
Tripp Burton (TB): This combination of talent could make this a must-see critical favorite.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This populist film should touch on the anger and frustration that occurred after the housing bust of 2008, but I am not certain that it will actually probe too deeply and will instead settle for surface emotions.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The subject matter doesn’t hold a lot of interest for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Feminist western set in the closing days of the Civil War looks like a tough sit-through.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is a great cast, but the film doesn’t look up to their standards.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be an interesting film, but it could also veer into the strange territory of last year’s The Homesman, which proved a more frustrating than rewarding film. The somewhat feminist take on the western could be worth a view.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The subject matter would fit well in the Academy’s wheelhouse and I admit it looks interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): German film about that country’s confrontation of its Nazi past looks riveting.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has an interesting premise about the Germans not wanting to look too deeply into their Nazi past. It may not be the best made film, but sounds promising. Holocaust films often carry some weight at the Oscars, so it could make the final cut.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks to be of interest primarily for gambling fans.
Tripp Burton (TB): I love all of the talent involved here, so this is a must-see for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A gambling road trip movie is a decent premise, but this sounds just a little too rambling and slow moving to make it that interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m curious to see the train wreck even if it’s a bad film, it’s at least a step towards parity in the film industry.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Roland Emmerich’s take on the Stonewall riots was the scourge of the Toronto Film Festival and apt to meet with equal derision from the mainstream critics.
Tripp Burton (TB): I keep hearing really mixed things about this, both quality and content wise, but I’m curious to see what it really looks like.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A change of pace for normally action-oriented director Roland Emmerich seemed like a decent idea, but early reviews are not kind. The trailer is not bad, but does not instill that great an urge to see the film. I was hoping for more, but look to be gravely let down.
