After the stellar debut of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, but the lackluster opening of The Lego Ninjago Movie, it’s hard to know which way the box office winds will blow. Tom Cruise is a consistant box office draw, even when his films aren’t great. Of course, American Made also has the advantage of tons of advertising. Flatliners, on the other hand, has had a decent, but unexceptional advertising campaign and being a remake of a popular 1990s could have some residual appreciation to prop up its claim to a solid debut. All things considered, though, I give the edge ot Cruise and company as Flatliners has no major box office draws at the top of the ticket.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Any film that overly applies Tom Cruise’s massive ego has a long way to go to earn my interest. The trailers for this film haven’t done a good job of gaining it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This might be fun, but I’ve seen the trailer so many times I feel like I’ve already seen the film.
Tripp Burton (TB): I honestly had never heard of this movie until a few days ago. That isn’t a good sign.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is a hoot and early reviews are good, and Tom Cruise looks to be at his loosest in years. Should be fun.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have fond (distant) memories of watching the original in the theater. This remake doesn’t feel as interesting or compelling as that film did.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I didn’t like the original twenty-seven years ago, no reason to expect I’d like reliving the nightmare.
Tripp Burton (TB): Another unnecessary remake.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I never saw the original film, so I do not know if this one is similar. What looks like an interesting premise bogs down into a typical horror movie in the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like thrillers well enough, but this one doesn’t look all that original.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m not particularly fond of stalker films and this one isn’t apt to convince me otherwise.
Tripp Burton (TB): These cheap thrillers keep looking cheaper and cheaper.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An unhinged ex-husband decides to stalk his ex-wife, hasn’t this been done many times before? It looks unpleasant.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be quite funny, but it could also be entirely disappointing the trailer doesn’t give us enough information to make that call.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Awkward looking comedy might actually be fun in a strange way.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks unbearably trite.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It boasts a decent cast, but the trailer was confusing and certainly did not make me interested in seeing the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The teens-in-peril/coming of age concept has been overdone lately. This film, while slightly off that beaten path still doesn’t look that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Teen thriller doesn’t look very appealing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This seems like a fascinating little indie debut.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Teenage angst turns into serial killing. The early reviews are good, the trailer striking, but I am still not sure that I want to see it.
