The weekend should be a win for the box office. With Deepwater Horizon and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children hoping to do big dollars in an environment that hasn’t seen either type of film in some time. To a lesser extent, Masterminds does the same thing. This could be a strong weekend with Deepwater Horizon, but Miss Peregrine could be a spoiler.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Dramatizing one of the most significant ecological disasters in history is a poor choice. That it looks like it’s pro-BP, I’m not at all interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Real life disaster movie could be a technical marvel.
Tripp Burton (TB): This genre of Mark Wahlberg films isn’t my favorite of them, but if they are then this should be a solid example.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This should prove a gripping true-story film. It looks exciting, and probably informative.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks quite dumb, but the cast alone could give it some measure of worth.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not very interesting looking heist comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is a very fun cast, but I’ll wait until it is on TBS in a couple years to check it out on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a very unfunny heist movie. The trailer had no redeeming features.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is the kind of narrative that Tim Burton used to do wonders with. Let’s hope it’s a return to form.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Charming fantasy film could be Tim Burton’s biggest hit in years.
Tripp Burton (TB): It has been a while since Tim Burton has excited me about a movie, but this one has some good pedigree behind it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks good, and very much a Tim Burton film, though the early reviews are not great.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unappealing looking teen drama.
Tripp Burton (TB): Some strong Cannes buzz has me more interested than the plot description.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer did not make me want to see the film, though early reviews are decent. I will wait to hear more before I would go see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premise is one that holds some measure of interest for me and the cast is terrific, but something nags at me that this might not be that awesome.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Real-life British libel drama is probably better suited to cable TV, but should appeal strongly to discerning audiences.
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t need another Holocaust movie, but this one looks to at least have a unique take.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be an interesting take on Holocaust deniers, done with a first rate British cast, though early reviews are mixed.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Sophomoric and idiotic, I don’t hold out much hope for this film, but there is still a modicum of it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Lame looking comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very unfunny, but it is also not my cup of tea at all.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has a somewhat decent premise of a guy wanting to break up with his friends in order to grow up, but it looks like a poorly done movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer isn’t good, but there is enough to it that suggests the film might be modestly engaging, that I’m mostly just ambivalent.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This crowd-pleasing comedy is Sweden’s pick for this year’s Foreign Language Film Oscar.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a sweet little film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds like a typical heart warming film where an old embittered man is woken up by his new neighbors, but it looks like it might be better than average.
