As we move into the fall, the limited releases are going to get more prestigious and the wide releases are going to be either Halloween or holiday-themed. This weekend, we have one such film competing with a film that’s typically seen early in the year and the competition isn’t going to be very strong. Taking the top of this weekend’s box office is likely to be The Conjuring prequel The Nun, a supernatural horror film that promises to drawn in fans of the series even if the premise is starting to get a bit well worn. There’s at least some variety here compared to the Saw and Paranormal Activity films that once dominated cineplexes. Fighting for third place behind the fourth weekend of Crazy Rich Asians will be Peppermint, a revenge drama that looks a bit like The Equalizer crossed with Jodie Foster’s The Brave One.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This franchise has never appealed to me. The supernatural horror genre is simply not of interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The latest conjuring holds no interest for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): I feel like I’ve seen many better versions of this film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Iโ€™ve never seen any of the Conjuring films, and nothing about this trailer makes me want to start with this one. A big pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m loosely interested in this, but it has more to do with its potential rather than its poor advertising campaign.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Formulaic revenge drama looks to be too derivative to give us anything new.
Tripp Burton (TB): Jennifer Garner deserves better than this.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Perhaps Liam Neeson was not available, so Jennifer garner was cast. She probably can do a decent job, but Iโ€™m not very interested in seeing this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Films questioning religion and potentially that of their protagonists are a common enough film and being so common doesn’t make them seem that much more compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A look at the investigation of a saintly apparition from the church’s perspective could be something different.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks bland.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I suppose this could prove interesting, but it mainly looks dull.
