After three weeks of dreadful box office, the cineplexes are about to get an influx of attendees thanks to two major new releases. The romantic comedy Home Again may struggle in spite of the heavy promotion the film is getting against the first major horror film to give audiences something to get excited about. The adaptation of Stephen King’s It, problematic as it seems on paper, has earned some strong early buzz, which should easily help it top the box office.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a surprisingly affecting comedy.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast could make this a better-than-average modern romantic comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): This feels like a solid romantic comedy that I will catch some Sunday on TBS.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Reese Witherspoon is always charming, and the trailer looks cute. I worry that it will be nothing more than cute.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Although I’m annoyed that they are splitting this book into two, one in the past, one in the present, I’m mildly intrigued.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not sure this needed to be remade, but early word is that it is even better than the 1990 TV miniseries.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a solid Stephen King adaptation.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It might prove a scary film, but the preview did not ratchet up the tension. I will probably pass, though I know a lot of people that are looking forward to it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While the story might be interesting, the carelessness of the film and its pre-9/11 release suggest a crassness of intent that I don’t particularly like.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It looks like a trivialization of the horrific events of the day of which we are reminded on TV on every anniversary.
Tripp Burton (TB): The more I hear about this movie, the more misguided it sounds.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be a gripping story of five people caught in an elevator on 9/11. The trailer should have been more exciting than it was, so will have to wait for reviews.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Anime and I don’t care much for each other and while this has some elements that I appreciate from the likes of Hayao Miyazaki, this isn’t one of his films, so I’ll pass.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking subtitled animated Japanese film might have a better shot at box office gold in a dubbed version.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks lovely and strange, just what I want from Kamiyama.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Any GKids film is usually worth watching, though the trailer did not make as good a case as usual for this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Nothing about this Bollywood comedy is interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Awful looking Bollywood comedy will likely sink without a trace.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful in any language.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like an incredibly stupid Indian comedy. I’m not sure who the target audience is.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The talent involved would suggest a competent drama, but the trailer isn’t very interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low-profile J.D. Salinger bio looks worth seeking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): J.D. Salinger had an interesting life, but I’m not sure if this will capture it in the right way.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I like the cast and a film about J. D. Salinger should be good, but the early reviews are so bad that it sounds like a miss.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): You cannot go wrong with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, but the trailer isn’t exciting enough.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Films from the Dardenne Brothers are always interesting, no reason to doubt this mystery thriller won’t be as well.
Tripp Burton (TB): Any new Dardennes film is a cause for celebration.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like an interesting film of a doctor trying to find out about a patient she didn’t treat. It may get heavy into subplots, but looks worthwhile.
