We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

Star Trek: Beyond

The Star Trek franchise has been a small time player at the Oscars, never competing beyond the tech categories. The same will play out this time as well.

The film, which marks the third outing of the rebooted series falls on the heels of a film that only managed a Best Visual Effects nomination after the first of the reboots which pulled in four nominations, including the franchise’s only win for Best Makeup. What will the future hold for this third film?

Best Makeup seems like a solid bet this time out. While the middle film didn’t have a lot of makeup to recognize, this one seems to have quite a bit more, which should help it towards a nomination. A win seems unlikely at this juncture. Best Visual Effects could also be a possibility, but the competition this year will be fierce and I don’t know if it will manage anything.
