Oscar News

  • The Academy released the short list this week for Best Visual Effects, leaving 15 eligible films.
  • Kung Fu Panda 2 led the Annie Award nominees for animated films, with 12 nominations. Puss in Boots and Rango each got 9 nods.
  • The Washington D.C. Film Critics named The Artist their Best film of the year, while spreading the wealth and giving Martin Scorsese their Best Director prize. The acting winners were George Clooney, Michelle Williams, Albert Brooks and Octavia Spencer.
  • Rainey Qualley, the daughter of Andie MacDowell, will be Miss Golden Globe this January.
  • Pharrell Williams and Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer will act as co-music consultants for this year’s ceremony.
  • Contract disputes at R.S. Owens & Co., the company that makes the Oscar statuettes, won’t affect this year’s show because the Academy has enough statues stored up for the 2012 winners.

Review Round-Up

  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy came out of the gate strong this week, picking up an 89 on Metacritic. A variety of critics love the adaptation, calling it classically made and citing Gary Oldman’s central performance as the major highlight.
  • Jason Reitman has managed Best Picture nominations for his last two films, but Young Adult has a 74 on Metacritic and seems to have as many detractors as it does supporters. The character study has as many brilliant citations as it does plodding and rambling ones.
  • Tilda Swinton is getting the bulk of the praise for We Need to Talk About Kevin, which has managed a barely-positive 69 on Metacritic.

Oscar Box Office

  • Hugo went up the box office ladder last week, moving to third place and grossing more than $25 million in two weeks.
  • Shame and The Descendants continue strong turns in limited release, with The Descandants gearing for wide release in the next few weeks. Shame has an over $30,000 per screen average for the second week in a row.

Oscar Farewell

  •  Bill McKinney, who uttered the immortal line “squeal like a pig” in Best Picture nominee Deliverance died at the age of 80. He also appeared in Oscar nominated films The Green Mile and City Slickers.
