Precursor: 12th Detroit Critics Nominations (2018)

By virtue of being one of the early nomination sets out their, the Detroit Critics have made themselves a beacon for others to look to for inspiration, but are their selections that inspirational? Somewhat yes. Somewhat no. Apart from elevating a film like If Beale Street Could Talk, they didn’t give much boost to films that weren’t already in the conversation. Eighth Grade leads their nominations only because of the breakthrough category from where two nominations came. That film, along with First Reformed benefit a bit from these selections, but will it be enough without further support from other groups? Unlikely.
