The first step towards the Oscar begins with the Art Directors Guild award. As expected, the two films that are most competitive at the Oscars won their various awards tonight. The Great Gatsby‘s period win should be key to its eventual win. Gravity won fantasy meaning it’s still in the hunt and Her won contemporary.

These are the mysteries of the Art Directors and Costume Designers. How was Inception a fantasy, but Black Swan as contemporary? How was Walk the Line contemporary, but Good Night and Good Luck period? They make these bizarre selections all the time.

Perfect picks, my personal top three art direction in films this year have been The Great Gatsby, Gravity and Her, It will probably win Gatsby at the oscar.

Wow! If Gatsby wins from the Costume guild, it could be the third film in the past ten years to win both Costume Design and Production Design (formerly Art Direction).
