Warner Bros. should either be kicking itself or should fire its entire awards publicity staff. Selma, which is receiving very strong reviews, was entirely ignored on this year’s Producers Guild of America list, completely destroying the film’s chances at winning Best Picture. The film, about legendary civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., is directed by Ava DuVernay and had been considered by many to be a shoo-in for all sorts of nominations. It has now been left out of four major guild announcements, which puts even a Best Picture nomination at risk.

Last year, Paramount failed to get Wolf of Wall Street ready for critics in time, delaying the arrival of screeners until after most critics had already voted, making it nearly impossible for the film to gain traction. It was even ignored by the Screen Actors Guild, but bounced back when the other guilds started announcing roughly a month later. This time, a film not directed by Martin Scorsese, has had a rougher fate. While it could still bounce back to earn several Oscar nominations, its future has been forever hampered by poor planning.

Other prominent Best Picture contenders that are missing from this list are Unbroken, Into the Woods, Interstellar, A Most Violent Year and Guardians of the Galaxy. Gone Girl is the top grossing of this year’s nominees followed far behind by The Grand Budapest Hotel. This seems to be the lowest-grossing slate the PGA has ever put together. Getting the biggest boosts from this list are American Sniper, Gone Girl, Nightcrawler and Whiplash.
