Precursor: 2nd Los Angeles Online Critics Nominations (2018)

While some of the top nominees this year come as no surprise right now (The Favourite and A Star Is Born for example), the critics can still surprise. Tying The Favourite for most nominations, with ten each, is Black Panther. The film wasn’t expected to perform this well during precursor season, so this could very well be an outlier. However, if other critics groups keep heaping this level of praise on the film, it could emerge as a stronger Oscar contender in categories we haven’t really been expecting. That said, a lot of the choices here are somewhat expected. The Hate U Give performed much more strongly than expected while First Man, Vice, and Green Book seemingly underperformed.
