And there you have the winners of the 53rd Annual British Academy of Film & Television Arts Awards. There were very few surprises and a lot of waters became clear, but a couple of contests remain as competitive as ever, though BAFTA may give us the final glimpse into the Oscar competition. Streep picking up Best Actress may be a fluke of the familiarity of BAFTA voters and Margaret Thatcher or it could be a sign that Oscar has chosen a leading lady and it’s not Viola Davis. I still think Davis may end up with the Oscar, but Streep has never been in a stronger position for earning her third Oscar. Jean Dujardin picks up his second consecutive award for The Artist suggesting he may be come the first French actor to win Best Actor. I thought the SAG selection might be a one-off thing, but two prizes suggests Dujardin may have just become the frontrunner. Harvey Weinstein may be the best campaigner in Oscar history.
In addition to the nominees and/or winners listed below, this year, we’re giving you a quick background on each individual precursor including founding year, first awards year and a glimpse at how many predictions the group has gotten right in the last five years. This data can be found below.
