The Grammy Awards mean next to nothing when it comes to Oscar. Their eligibility period includes October, November and December of the prior year (in this case 2010). So, you’ll have year-end releases competing with current-years, which makes them almost impossible to adjudicate. In addition, TV and web series are also eligible, making further confusion.

This year, of the Compilation Soundtrack nominees contain two movies and both were 2010 releases even if the category typically means next to nothing with Oscar. In the score category, of the four big screen efforts nominated, three were 2010 release (one of which is Oscar-nominated King’s Speech), though the one 2011 release (Harry Potter) is a contender for this year’s Original Score category. In the Song category, three are motion pictures with one of them a 2010 release (Oscar nominee “I See the Light” from Tangled) as well as songs from 2011 films Winnie the Pooh and Footloose. The former is not likely to compete, but the latter is probably a good bet for Oscar consideration. So, take these with a grain of salt and for the novelty they are.

In addition to the nominees and/or winners listed below, this year, we’re giving you a quick background on each individual precursor including founding year, first awards year and a glimpse at how many predictions the group has gotten right in the last five years. This data can be found below.
