The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced its nominees for their annual Oscar precursor called the Golden Globes. There were no hugely embarrassing selections this year (a la The Tourist), though many notable names were missing. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is HFPA bait if anything is, but it wasn’t included. Was it screened too late? We probably won’t know for awhile (at least until the Producers Guild of America weigh in). The Ides of March made a surprising reemergence into the race with several nominations including triple nominee George Clooney (director and screenplay for this film, plus actor for The Descendants) and double nominee Ryan Gosling (in Best Actor for both Drama and Comedy/Musical for this and Crazy Stupid Love.
Young Adult‘s Oscar chances have evaporated with the film and supporting actor Patton Oswalt missing out in the obviously friendly HFPA, Elizabeth Olsen also took a hit for Martha Marcy May Marlene. Nominations co-announcer Woody Harrelson was another surprising omission for his work on Rampart. No Nick Nolte (Warrior) or Armie Hammer (J. Edgar). No Max von Sydow (probably part of the Extremely Close failure). No Carey Mulligan (Shame) or Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus may not have screened for them). All in all, the only dread I have now is that Jonah Hill, one of the most annoying actors currently working, will get an Oscar nomination after this love.
In addition to the nominees and/or winners listed below, this year, we’re giving you a quick background on each individual precursor including founding year, first awards year and a glimpse at how many predictions the group has gotten right in the last five years. This data can be found below.
