There was some actual doubt by the time the awards came to director, that it could go to either Hugo or The Artist, although I think all the technical awards showered on Hugo were a tad generous. Almasy is spot on about The Tree of Life deserving a win for cinematography, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes for visuals. I loved Hugo, but it got old hearing Martin Scorsese get thanked for the billionth time.

Meryl Streep’s win was a nice surprise, although the film surrounding her was very glossed over and unremarkable and didn’t deserve her tremendous work.

I would like to have seen Viola Davis in the supporting actress category over Octavia; I thought Octavia was the least deserving of the five nominees, but I thought her and Viola’s roles were pretty equally supporting.

As for Billy Crystal, he was decent. I think he laughed at his own jokes far too often, and didn’t have much to do after the opening number, but he was much better than the debacle that was last year’s hosting duties. I give him credit for the biggest laugh of the night (when he read Nick Nolte’s mind).

Other disappointments/criticisms:
Cirque du Soleil (mixed feelings because it was unnecessary and awkwardly placed).

Christopher Guest and Friends (funny for about eight seconds, then it got dull and monotonous and terribly unfunny. I love this troupe, but it felt very forced).

Robert Downey Jr./Gwyneth Paltrow (Big fail!)

Ben Stiller/Emma Stone (Enough already, we get it)

The overall sound (irritating tinny ringing throughout made me want to watch it on mute with the subtitles on)

I’m personally offended for the lost of The Tree of Life for Best Cinematography

And War Horse for best Sound Editing

And Rise of the Planet of the Apes for Best Visual Effects

All other wins are acceptable.
