The British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) has released their annual longlist of productions. These selections are the only ones from which members may select the final nominees, which gives us a bit of insight into where the BAFTA group’s mindset is and, in tandem, what the Oscars might be thinking. BAFTA, being one of the few (Insert Nationality) Oscars that are selected from English-language films, have become something of a bellwether for potential Oscar consideration. BAFTA was the first group to put forward Tilda Swinton’s performance in Michael Clayton as a potential spoiler over critics darling Amy Ryan. They do heavily favor British productions, so keep that in mind when reviewing the list, but otherwise, these are an interesting look at what is currently in the minds of voters. I’ll have more commentary at a later date once I’ve had a chance to fully review these.

Some, not all, categories have items listed in bold. These are the top vote-getters in each Chapter (like the Academy has branches). While these aren’t the guaranteed nominees, it shows which films and performances have the strongest support. I’ve added tallies separately for these as a way of comparison.

In addition to the nominees and/or winners listed below, this year, we’re giving you a quick background on each individual precursor including founding year, first awards year and a glimpse at how many predictions the group has gotten right in the last five years. This data can be found below.
