BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING

Opens September 7, 2012
in NY, LA and Seattle
Expanding nationwide in the following weeks

Beauty Is Embarrassing is a funny, irreverent, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of Americaโ€™s most important artists, Wayne White.

Raised in the mountains of Tennessee, Wayne White started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show, Pee-weeโ€™s Playhouse, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently, his word paintings, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings, have made him a darling of the fine art world.

Beauty Is Embarrassing chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own narrator, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious, biographical one-man show. The pieces are drawn from performances at venues in Tennessee, New York and Los Angeles including the famous Roseland Ballroom and the Largo Theater.

Whether heโ€™s parading a twenty foot tall puppet through the Tennessee hillside, romping around the Hollywood Hills dressed in his LBJ puppet suit, relaxing in his studio pickinโ€™ his banjo, or watching his children grow up much too soon, Wayne White always seems to have a youthful grin and a desperate drive to create art and objects. It is an infectious quality that will inspire everyone to find their pleasure in life and pursue it at all costs.

At its core, Beauty Is Embarrassing is a reminder that we should all follow our passion. It is those creative impulses that will lead us to where we need to go.

Iโ€™M CAROLYN PARKER: THE GOOD, THE MAD AND THE BEATIFUL

Directed by Jonathan Demme

Opens September 12, 2012 in New York

Carolyn Parker was the last to leave her neighborhood when a mandatory evacuation order was decreed as Hurricane Katrina approached New Orleans in the summer of 2005. After the floodwaters subsided, Mrs. Parker was the first resident to return to her now flood-devastated community with what many thought was the “impossible dream” of bringing her ruined home back to life.
I’m Carolyn Parker: The Good, the Mad, and the Beautiful unfolds as an inspiring portrait of an extraordinary woman. Mrs. Parker takes us deep inside her personal biography as a child born in the 40’s, raised in segregated New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward, who became a teen-ager joining the front lines in the Civil Rights movement of the 60’s, who worked for thirty years as a cook-turned-chef in the hotel industry, and became one of the most outspoken voices in the fight for every New Orleanian’s right to return home after the devastation of the floods that followed Katrina. That Carolyn faced these odds with unbridled wit, spirituality and an abiding sense of social justice borne of her life in New Orleans makes for a unique cinematic tale of personal triumph.
I’m Carolyn Parker: The Good, the Mad, and the Beautiful is the portrait of an “ordinary family” who banded together under extraordinary circumstances, and reclaimed their home.

THE OTHER DREAM TEAM

** RELEASE DATE: September 14, 2012 **
Director: Marius Markevicius
Producers: Jon Weinbach, Marius Markevicius
Cast: Sarunas Marciulionis, Arturas Karnisovas, Bill Walton, Mickey Hart

Led by the trail-blazing skills of Sarunas Marciulionis and Arvydas Sabonis, the 1992 Lithuanian Olympic basketball team helped their country break free from the shackles of Communism. After leading the USSR to a gold medal (and victory over the U.S.A.) at the ’88 Seoul Olympics, Marciulionis and Sabonis were poster boys for the Soviet sports machine. Four year later, after the fall of the Soviet Union, they emerged as symbols of democracy, willing newly-independent Lithuania to the medal stand in Barcelona.
โ€œThe Other Dream Teamโ€ documents the Lithuaniansโ€™ experiences behind the Iron Curtain, where elite athletes were subjected to the vagaries of Communist rule. As they smuggled VCRs on road trips and hid from KGB agents, Lithuaniaโ€™s basketball stars always shared a common goal – to utilize their athletic gifts to help a nation bloom.
The โ€™92 Lithuanian team won fans around the world for its hard-nosed play โ€“ and also through its unusual connection with the Grateful Dead. Inspired by the Lithuanian team’s message of freedom, the Dead band provided financial assistance to the Lithuanians and helped create the team’s distinctive, tie-dye warm ups.
In Barcelona, Lithuania advanced to the medal round, where the team faced Russia – Lithuania’s oppressor since 1940 – for the bronze. Lithuania emerged victorious, and then rose to the medal stand wearing colorful gear emblazoned with the Dead’s signature skeleton logo. By beating Russia, David had beaten Goliath – and the Lithuanian team had raised the game of basketball into a memorable expression of political and cultural identity.
With a mix of verite scenes, incisive interviews and extraordinary archival footage and photos culled from former Soviet archives, audiences will see how a special group of athletes journeyed through the bleak era of Communism to the rebirth of a nation — and the re-discovery own free will. โ€œThe Other Dream Teamโ€ is a story that will resonate for any viewer with an interest in politics, pop culture or basketball. It is global basketball’s ultimate ‘long, strange trip’ — with a very happy ending.

The House I Live In

Charlotte Street Films Presents

A film by Eugene Jarecki

RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 2012
Running Time: 105 minutes

Over the past 40 years, the War on Drugs has cost more than $1 trillion dollars and accounted for over 45 million arrests. The US incarcerates almost 25% of the prisoners in the entire world although we have only 5% of the worldโ€™s population. Black individuals comprise 13% of the US population and 14% of drug users, yet they are 37% of the people arrested for drug offenses and 56% of those incarcerated for drug crimes.

As America remains embroiled in conflict overseas, a less visible war is taking place at home, costing countless lives, destroying families, and inflicting untold damage on future generations of Americans. Over forty years, the War on Drugs has accounted for more than 45 million arrests, made America the world’s largest jailer, and damaged poor communities at home and abroad. Yet for all that, drugs are cheaper, purer, and more available today than ever before.
Filmed in more than twenty states, THE HOUSE I LIVE IN captures heart-wrenching stories from individuals at all levels of Americaโ€™s War on Drugs. From the dealer to the grieving mother, the narcotics officer to the senator, the inmate to the federal judge, the film offers a penetrating look inside Americaโ€™s longest war, offering a definitive portrait and revealing its profound human rights implications.
While recognizing the seriousness of drug abuse as a matter of public health, the film investigates the tragic errors and shortcomings that have meant it is more often treated as a matter for law enforcement, creating a vast machine that feeds largely on Americaโ€™s poor, and especially on minority communities. Beyond simple misguided policy, the film examines how political and economic corruption have fueled the war for forty years, despite persistent evidence of its moral, economic, and practical failures.

Millennium Films Presents

Opens October 5, 2012
Rated R for sexual content, violence and language.

From Oscarยฎ nominated director Lee Daniels (PRECIOUS) comes a provocative, sexually-charged tale of desire, ambition, prejudice and crime set in the 1960s swamplands of South Florida. Boyish Jack Jansen (Efron), son of the local newspaper publisher, has just returned home after being kicked out of college, only to take the lowly job of paperboy. Bringing in tow his hotshot writing partner Yardley (Oyelowo) and the alluring death-row groupie Charlotte Bless (Kidman), Ward plans to prove that an innocent man has been railroaded on his way to the electric chair. With Jack as their driver, the quartet arranges to meet Hillary Van Wetter (Cusack), the seedy alligator hunter hastily convicted of killing the local sheriff, at the prison. But what erupts between them all is a tangled web of sexual tension, mixed motives and shadowy facts that will set off not only a search for the truth but a chain reaction of passion and violence. That all changes on the day that Jeff decides to plant the perfect backyard, a home improvement project that almost instantly sets off a hysterical chain of events involving multiple infidelities, extortion, organ donation, and somebody ending up on the wrong side of a bow-and-arrow. Devilish throughout, THE DETAILS also stars Laura Linney in a stand-out performances as the Langโ€™s lonely neighbor, Lila.

In the end, the film is both a love story and an existential horror story. The root of Jeffโ€™s misdeeds after all, is that he wants to love his wife but no longer knows how. Filmmaker Jacob Aaron Estes plays with the notion that the smallest thing can unravel our lives. His narrative spontaneity and anarchic spirit allow characters to keep digging themselves into deeper moral holes to see if the universe will punish them. KEEP THE LIGHTS ON

Written by: Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias
Directed by: Ira Sachs
Starring: Thure Lindhardt, Zachary Booth, Julianne Nicholson, Souleymane Sy Syvane, Paprika Steen
Studio: Music Box Films
Release Date: September 7, 2012
Genre: Drama

A decade-spanning story of a passionate, volatile relationship between two men in New York City

Winner of Outfestโ€™s Grand Jury Award for Outstanding U.S. Dramatic Feature Film, as well as the Berlin International Film Festivalโ€™s prestigious Teddy Award, Keep the Lights On chronicles an emotionally and sexually charged journey of two men in New York City through love, friendship, and addiction. Documentary filmmaker Erik (acclaimed Danish actor Thure Lindhardt in his first leading role in a U.S. film) and closeted lawyer Paul (Zachary Booth, Damages) meet through a casual encounter, but soon find a deeper connection and become a couple. Individually and together, they are risk takersโ€”compulsive, and fueled by drugs and sex. In an almost decade-long relationship defined by highs, lows, and dysfunctional patterns, Erik struggles to negotiate his own boundaries and dignity while being true to himself. Keep the Lights On is shot with a grainy beauty that resonates with the texture of New York City, accentuated by disco beats and a mournful cello, both from musician Arthur Russellโ€™s eclectic catalog. Director Ira Sachsโ€™s fearlessly personal screenplay is anchored by Lindhardt, who embodies Erikโ€™s isolation and vulnerability with a gentle presence. Harrowing and romantic, visceral and layered, Keep the Lights On is a film that looks at love and all of its manifestations, taking it to dark depths and bringing it back to a place of grace.

The narrative provides no psychological backstory, and yet we grow increasingly close to this fragile person, whose life does not have a clear path but rather consists of a series of emotional states. As the protagonist moves through the filmโ€™s impressive locations, her path through life is much like an orbiting satellite: detached, lonely and ultimately destined to crash.
