Every week, I get several press releases, screening invitations and other notifications from a handful of studio contacts. While I won’t be sharing any information regarding my screening invites, some of the press releases might be of interest to my readers, so I thought I’d start sharing them in toto with all of you. These could include new image galleries for various films or important updates to upcoming releases from various smaller studios and art house production companies.

Press Release: Freestyle Obtains Rights to ‘Munger Road’

FREESTYLE DIGITAL MEDIA SCARES UP RIGHTS FOR SUSPENSE THRILLER โ€˜MUNGER ROADโ€™

Los Angeles, CA (June 26, 2012) โ€“Freestyle Digital Media LLC (FDM) has acquired the rights to MUNGER ROAD, a tension filled suspense-thriller from Insomnia Productions that will debut on DVD, Digital Download and Video On-Demand. The film was written and directed by Nicholas Smith, produced by Kyle Heller and stars Bruce Davison (โ€œX-Men,โ€ โ€œLuckโ€). Last year, MUNGER ROAD was released theatrically by Freestyle Releasing in the Chicago area to a remarkable $30,000 plus per screen average. The film is slated for release on September 11th.

MUNGER ROAD takes place in a sleepy Midwestern town on a night when a group of teens explore the famed โ€˜Munger Roadโ€™ โ€“ a spot where a horrific tragedy occurred years earlier. Something terrible happens to the group, forcing the local police to acknowledge there is a returning killer lurking in the area as thousands of people converge on the town for the annual Scarecrow Festival.

The deal was negotiated by FDMโ€™s CEO Susan Jackson and Executive Producer Jeffery Smith, from Insomnia Productions. โ€œโ€™Munger Roadโ€™ has a loyal following of fans and appeals to all ages,โ€ said Jackson. โ€œIt really delivers on the scares in the tradition of โ€˜The Amityville Horrorโ€™ and โ€˜An American Haunting.โ€™ Itโ€™s based on a real place and folklore, which gives it an extra edge.โ€

Freestyle Digital Mediaโ€™s recent slate of releases includes the critically-acclaimed Filipino horror-thriller THE ROAD from director Yam Laranas. In addition, DEADHEADS, the acclaimed horror-comedy from directors Brett and Drew Pierce, SWINGING WITH THE FINKELS starring Mandy Moore and directed by Jonathan Newman, and TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN directed by Stuart Beattie, which also marked the first feature film to debut on Facebook.

Synopsis:
In GOATS, Ellis (Graham Phillips) is the most adult member of his eccentric family at 15 years old. His mom (Vera Farmiga) is a New Age hippie that spends all of her time working on self-help rituals with her hustler boyfriend (Justin Kirk). His dad (Ty Burrell) left home years ago and is more focused on his new wife (Keri Russell) and family. And then thereโ€™s Goat Man (David Duchovny), the goat-herding sage who has lived in their pool house since Ellis was a child, teaching him the meaning of stability, commitment, and expanding one’s mind.

When Ellis decides to leave Tucson to go to the same East Coast prep school that his father went to, he easily assimilates to his new environment – even gaining the attention of a local girl (Dakota Johnson). But as he reโ€connects with his estranged father, he finds Goat Manโ€™s influence and his life out West thrown into stark contrast.

Based on Mark Jude Poirierโ€™s best-selling novel, director Christopher Neil’s hilarious and poignant film is a witty reversal of the coming of age formula, a beautifully honest portrayal of life with its rough edges, awkward moments, and non-endings.
