Five new trailers tonight. They are: Applause, Cars 2, Cowboys and Aliens, Five Minarets in New York and Green Lantern.

GREEN LANTERN

Plot Summary: The popular DC comic is brought to the bring screen about a human man given extra-terrestrial power, all held within a small ring.
Release Date: June 17, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B+
Commentary: A lot of fanboys are gonna get excited by this. I’m modestly interested, though the acting does look fairly unexceptional.
Rating: C+
Commentary: It’s good in that it essentially captures the character. It’s bad in that it’s merely a hand-drawn image, not an actual still from the film.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: Visual Effects and other tech categories are possible, but I wouldn’t expect too much for it.

COWBOYS & ALIENS

Plot Summary: A mysterious stranger is wanted for crimes he doesn’t know he committed, but in the Old West, extra-terrestrials aren’t to be expected.
Release Date: July 29, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: It’s a rather mysterious production and that makes it interesting, but Harrison Ford’s performance looks utterly awful. Whether the film is any good or not won’t matter as most people will put down the money to see it regardless.
Rating: A-
Commentary: It’s an excellent teaser trailer that doesn’t give too much away and doesn’t go overboard. It’s atmospheric and richly colored.

Oscar Chances: A lot, and I do mean a lot, depends on how good the movie is. A huge box office success does not guarantee Oscar success, but the tech awards are likely its only opportunities.

APPLAUSE

Plot Summary: A recovering alcoholic seeks to restart her life and get back all she lost including her children.
Release Date: December 3, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: The trailer itself isn’t much to look at, though the showcased scenes with Paprika Steen suggest a tremendously good performance. So, it could be worth watching just for that.
Rating: C+
Commentary: Fairly ordinary and unexceptional poster that doesn’t really seem to go for much beyond the competent.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: If it weren’t already such a crowded year for Best Actress contenders and if there wasn’t an Academy bias towards foreign performances, I’d say she could be a contender.

FIVE MINARETS IN NEW YORK

Plot Summary: A suspected terrorist is about to be deported to Turkey. Two agents from that country arrive in the U.S. to take him into custody, but that’s just the beginning.
Release Date: November 5, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C
Commentary: The trailer tries to paint itself as a sociopolitical action thriller, but doesn’t answer the question of whether it is trying to present Muslims as villains or as a combination of peaceful and warmongers. That discrepancy doesn’t give me much interest in seeing it.
Rating: C+
Commentary: Although it has a nice selection of colors, the poster is fairly ordinary and copies a number of other posters, both more and less successful.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

CARS 2, trailer #2

Plot Summary: The sequel to Pixar’s automotive hit takes Mater and Lightning McQueen across the pond and embroils them in international espionage.
Release Date: June 24, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: Has Pixar lost its magic? They choose one of their least popular films for a sequel and then make a trailer that’s as interesting as a wet noodle. At least they have confirmed that this is an international spy flick, but there’s almost nothing humorous in this trailer. That’s disappointing.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.
