It’s a slow day for new trailers with only Outside the Law showing up. But, we do have three new posters to show you: Conviction (#2), Strange Powers, and Tron Legacy (#2),

OUTSIDE THE LAW

Plot Summary: An examination of the French occupation of Algeria and the story of three brothers who each face the conflict in their own ways, yet each trying to survive.
Release Date: November 3, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: Pretty typical period dramatic trailer with a narrator not terribly adept at creating tension. With Kenneth Turan the only critic of note, it almost seems like producers are building this film as an Oscar contender without it really being one.
Rating: B-
Commentary: The poster works quite well, using the symbolism of the French flag with the smaller image of the three brothers. It creates a nice size differential that’s emblematic of the film’s conflict. There isn’t nearly enough color, but it’s not too bad overall.

Oscar Chances: Algeria’s official submission to the Academy. It looks like the type of film the Academy likes to vote for, but will it have the votes?

TRON LEGACY, poster #2

Plot Summary: A re-envisioning of the legendary ’80s virtual reality film Tron.
Release Date: December 17, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Tron Legacy
Rating: B
Commentary: I think what sells me most about this poster is the color scheme. It’s straight out of the ’80s cult classic, but it fits so amazingly well, though the actor positioning is a bit odd, but hopefully explained better within the film.

STRANGE POWERS: STEPHIN MERRITT AND THE MAGNETIC FIELDS, poster

Plot Summary: A documentary about the legendary, but mostly unheard of group The Magnetic Fields.
Release Date: October 27, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields
Rating: C
Commentary: Whereas the trailer was quirky and interesting in a good way, this poster is quirky and interesting in a rather silly way. It is trying far too hard to elicit snickers while being patently obvious.

CONVICTION, poster #2

Plot Summary: A loving sister puts herself through law school in order to defend her incarcerated brother against a crime he did not commit.
Release Date: October 15, 2010

Previous Preview:
Conviction
Rating: C-
Commentary: The original poster, despite not feeling like it fit the film, was a far cry better than this egocentric poster that lacks color, compassion or strength.
