I don’t think Baz Luhrmann understands what the middle ground is. Of course, if he didn’t make the movies he wanted to, they wouldn’t be nearly as interesting.

The Great Gatsby

Plot Summary: The classic American novel gets the Baz Luhrmann treatment in this dizzying spectacle of Roaring Twenties decadence and obsession.
Release Date: December 25, 2012

Rating: A
Commentary: I love the intricacy of this design. It conjures up images of a long gone era, which is precisely what it needs to do for fans of the book without being too showy.
Rating: B+
Commentary: You can’t watch this trailer and not see Lurhmann’s grandiose aspirations all over it. And although it has too many modern elements to the structure, you can’t help but be dazzled by the sheer audacity of it…and in return, a lot of curious people will sit down for it, 3D and all.

Oscar Chances: The film is going to be so divisive that I doubt it will crack the Best Picture race, but anything is possible. Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton could all be nomination contenders and the film could easily get mentions in several categories with Art Direction and Costume Design the film’s best bets for wins.
