Precursor: 16th Oklahoma Critics Awards (2021)
The Power of the Dog is the best in six categories, including Best Director, but not good enough to top Best Picture? Dubious. Award Tallies (6) The Power of the Dog (3) Licorice Pizza The Awards

Precursor: 10th North Carolina Critics Nominations & Awards (2021)
North Carolina’s film critics released their nominations and winners today without any really huge surprises. The top two nominees came in first and second in the win count, though in reverse order with The Power of the Dog losing out to Dune by three nominations, but then topping it by one win. Nominations Tallies (13)…

Precursor: 17th Austin Critics Nominations (2021)
It’s rather surprising to see that a technical marvel like Dune could consistently bring in fewer nominations than the more intimate The Power of the Dog, but this is the dynamic we’ve seen play out for most of the year. Not a lot of oddities here with the stronger than normal performance by non-English language…

94th Oscar Preview: Precursor Winners & Losers, Week 5
As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences). A grand total of two precursors actually announced in the last week, the Columbus critics and the Chicago…

Precursor: 6th Chicago Independent Critics Nominations (2021)
More love for Spider-Man: Far from Home than we’ve otherwise recently seen, but is that indicative of anything? Who knows for sure at this point. Meanwhile, The Harder They Fall has the best showing so far. Nominations Tallies (9) The Power of the Dog (8) Dune (6) CODA (5) The Harder They Fall, Spider-Man: No…

Precursor: 20th Columbus Critics Nominations (2021)
The Power of the Dog dominated like no other film with double-digit nominations. Licorice, Belfast, and Dune were the next most prolific. Not much to see here. Nominations Tallies (12) The Power of the Dog (8) Licorice Pizza (7) Belfast, Dune (5) West Side Story (4) CODA, The French Dispatch, The Tragedy of Macbeth (3)…

94th Oscar Preview: Precursor Winners & Losers, Week 4
As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences). If last week seemed, this week may well seem glacial. The Christmas and New Year’s weeks are the…

Precursor: 11th Black Critics Awards (2021)
Will Smith was crowned Best Actor for Best Picture winner King Richard at the Black Film Critics Circle awards. The film took two other awards while Dune, The Harder They Fall, and The Power of the Dog got two each. Most interesting to note is that on their list of the ten best films of…

Precursor: 13th North Texas Critics Awards (2021)
A strange bunch of selections. Some match other orgs’ selections, some are fresh, but ultimately not worth much with so many titles missing from their initial nominations. Award Tallies (2) Dune, The French Dispatch The Awards Best Picture The Green Knight Best Animated Film Raya and the Last Dragon Best Director Denis Villeneuve – Dune…

Precursor: 25th Florida Critics Awards (2021)
The Power of the Dog topped their list overall, but a small group like this shouldn’t announce runners-up. Far too many ties on hand. Nominations Tallies (5) The Power of the Dog (3) Dune The Awards
-
Precursor: 5th Online Female Critics Awards (2021)
Jane Campion’s feminist deconstruction of cowboy mythology struck a chord with the online female film critics who selected the film for Best Picture and three other awards with everything else getting split evenly among other titles. Awards Tallies (4) The Power of the Dog The Awards Best Picture The Power of the Dog (Runners-Up: Belfast,…

Precursor: 11th Nevada Critics Awards (2021)
The vagueries of tiny critics groups become apparent when films that no one else sees as major contenders get the most attention. Award Tallies (4) Nightmare Alley (2) CODA, The Power of the Dog The Awards

Precursor: 30th Annie Awards Nominations (2021)
With ASIFA Hollywood, you can often tell the dominant feature by how many nominations they receive. That puts three three Disney & Pixar efforts ahead of everyone else with The Mitchells vs. the Machines performing worse than expected and Flee doing better. Could this foreshadow the documentary Flee making the final Oscar list? It’s entirely…
