For our nineteenth Rundown article, we rundown Sound. After the jump, you’ll find our winner and runner-up predictions for Best Sound as well as general commentary about the race. Wednesday, we’ll cover cinematography and editing.

For our eighteenth Rundown article, we look at two animation categories, feature and short. After the jump, you’ll find our winner and runner-up predictions for Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short Film as well as general commentary about the race. Tuesday, we’ll cover the unified Sound category.

While Oscar pools might not hinge on a correct prediction in this category, it will be interesting to see how many go for traditional, for history, or for off-kilter.

Although the correlating category at the Oscars, Sound Editing, was eliminated, the tendency of Sound Mixing and Sound Editing to link up was fairly common, so a winner here might tell us some about the Sound category as well.

The best linked category to the Best Sound award at the Oscars will either be the start of a new conversation or the end of it. Will Sound of Metal win or will there be a surprise. We shall see.

The definitive group of cinematographers has a tendency to reject orthodoxy and pick winners that don’t link up with the Oscars. Will the same happen this year or are we destined for a connection? We’ll see.

While BAFTA might have stolen some of the wind in the Costume Designers Guild’s sails, never discount the guild most responsible for a category at the Oscars. Sometimes, their observations are more astute even if they don’t make up more than a fraction of Oscar voters.
