Trailer Watch: The Master
Two actors I’m ambivalent about (Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams) and one actor I can’t stomach anymore (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) with a director I love (Paul Thomas Anderson)? I still haven’t seen Punch-Drunk Love if that tells you anything about my interest in this film. The Master Plot Summary: A soldier, returning from home attempts…

Trailer Watch: Rise of the Guardians (trailer #2, new posters)
I’ve always been curious why secondary trailers and later tend to become more and more idiotic. Is the film comparatively problematic or do the trailer creators want it to appeal to the base denominator. Rise of the Guardians (trailer #2, new posters) Plot Summary: The Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman…
-
Trailer Watch: Looper (trailer #2)
Rian Johnson has displayed promise, but is this sci-fi thriller going to work? Looper (trailer #2) Plot Summary: A sci-fi tale where futuristic mafia men send victims back in time to be killed and disposed of, but when one “looper” as they’re called, must kill his future self, trying to contain the cunning and knowledgable…

Looking at the Weekend: Aug. 10-12, 2012
Whether a new lead can keep the franchise afloat remains to be seen. As the Bond series can tell you, changing out leads can have good and bad consequences. We’ll see if Jeremy Renner can have the same success that Daniel Craig did and not the same lack of success Timothy Dalton did. Consensus Below…

2012 Oscar Season Preview: Introduction
The last four months of every year are dedicated mostly to the analysis of Oscar contenders and their chances at year-end awards, box office crossover appeal and the ultimate prize handed out the following February. There are always films contending for the holiday dollars, but many of those films, unless they are blockbusters, won’t be…

Trailer Watch: The Woman in the Fifth
Intrigue. Sex. Dependable actors. It could be good. The Woman in the Fifth Plot Summary: A writer finds himself trapped in the web of an older woman who uses his daughter to keep sexual control over him. Trailer Watch: Man of Steel
Superhero films can’t seem to figure out how to make reboots work. This is the second franchise that’s re-booted itself after an unsuccessful reboot. If this is as good as The Incredible Hulk, then it might be worth the time. Man of Steel Plot Summary: A new reboot of one of the most popular 1980’s…
-
Trailer Watch: Life of Pi
I like Ang Lee as a director, but this just doesn’t look that interesting. Perhaps another trailer will excite me more. Life of Pi Plot Summary: Based on the popular children’s book, a young man finds himself shipwrecked with a hostile tiger as they float through the ocean hoping to find land. Release Date: November…
-
Trailer Watch: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Teen dramas aren’t my niche, but this one looks particularly engaging. The Perks of Being a Wallflower Plot Summary: An awkward teen finds friendship in an unlikely pair of social outcasts. Release Date: September 14, 2012 Poster Trailer Rating: C+ Commentary: Too much headspace creates an distancing effect, leaving the audience with too little imagination…

Looking at the Weekend: Aug. 3-5, 2012
There isn’t much in the landscape that could topple Total Recall. The Dark Knight Rises has been performing poorly as a holdover, but that may have more to do with the shooting than any perceived weakness, but since most seem to feel this is an inferior product to the prior film, that could explain it.…
-
Trailer Watch: The Intouchables
I’m wondering if the engraving company has started working on the Oscar statuette plaque for this one? The Intouchables Plot Summary: A white invalid takes on a poor, impatient black caregiver to help push him to his limits and provide the kind of companionship a more modest and submissive nurse wouldn’t be able to provide.…
