2008

Opening Tributes

Today, we introduce a new section of our site dedicated to honoring those artists whose lives have enriched our own, but have departed this mortal coil. While our 2007 offering is a limited one, we intend to expand this section more thoroughly as the year’s go by.

Peter Patrick has graciously put together a list of the greats who passed away in 2007. Follow the link above to Peter’s article.

Tributes

Here you will find tributes to the late greats who’ve left this world, but not without leaving an indelible impression on film history.

January Tributes

New tributes have been posted for the month of January 2008.

Tributes

Our January update is now posted. We are working on re-working how this section is handled, but for now, we will have a monthly look back at the dearly departed from the previous month.

2008 Tributes

The Tribute page for 2008 has been restructured and each individual now has their own separate page in a brand new format.

Major Tributes Update

After eight months, I have finally been able to pull together my tributes section, which has now been updated with more than 100 pages devoted to some of the most important and influential artists who have left us with great memories as they’ve passed on. While previously, we had done short paragraphs on each individual in a lump sum monthly package. I hope to be updating this weekly or as frequently as is possible. For now, please join me in giving a silent tribute to all of these great people who’ve died so far this year.

New Tributes

With several recent passings, I’ve added more Tributes to the 2008 Tribute page.

November 11, 2008

Several new tributes have now been uploaded. There aer twenty-two new pages, some of them are a result of my work on prepping some new content for my site, including pages for every Oscar nominee and winner in Academy history. That clean up is complete, so from this point forward, all new tributes will be for the recently departed.

New Tributes

Today’s update consists of twenty-two new tribute pages.

November, 2008

Completing the roster of November tributes, this update features fifteen new pages.

Tribute Notice

From now on, unless there’s a significant change to how Tributes themselves work, this page will no longer be updated with new tributes. However, the Annual page that links to each of the year’s tributes that are available will be updated every time a new tribute update goes into effect.

2009

December, 2008

December tributes, 33 in total, are now posted.

January, 2009

January tributes, 26 in total (including three for February), are now posted.

New Website Design, New Update

Now that the website has a new design, I have had a chance to get soem new tributes posted, including all of February and March and a couple of April tributes.

Maurice Jarre

Maurice Jarre is one of the most celebrated composers in history. His scores for Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago are two of the most memorable works. Although I only saw these films in recent years, their classicism is undeniable and his absence further shines a light on just how many greats we have lost.

Late-April Update

21 new Tributes are no online for most of April and a couple from March.

Beatrice Arthur

One of the greatest comic actresses in television history, Bea Arthur’s indelible work left an impression on everyone who watched her. I was first introduced to her on Golden Girls and that work alone helped me appreciate her magnificent timing, style and grace. Her work as a pioneer of womens rights on Maude, her tireless effort for equal rights in all avenues of American Life and her natural talent combine to make her passing all the more unfortunate.

Mid-May Update

This update contains another 21 new Tributes from April and the first two thirds of May.

Michael Jackson

An amazing performer, Michael Jackson was an integral part of my childhood. I grew up during the “Thriller” era where everyone wanted to be Michael (before Michael Jordan). The sequined single glove, the sequined socks, the red-and-black leather jacket. It was a persona and it was one that we lapped up with great ferocity. Not only was he a pop culture icon, he was a tremendous friend of the indigent, the poor and the embattled. He campaigned to feed children in Africa, preached tolerance and acceptance for everyone regardless of race or station. And, as one of the greatest musical performers to ever grace the music industry, he has left an indelible impression on an entire generation of people around the world.

June Update

We have 26 new tributes updated today of those who have passed since our last update (and a couple of late-to-our-attention individuals) through June 25, 2009.
