Synopsis:

From IMDb: “Survivors of the simian plague trigger an all-out war between humanity and Caesar’s growing forces.”

Poster: B- (4) / B+ / B (3)

Review: (#1-#4 below) When first looking at them, you must see all four side-by-side to recognize the distinguishing characteristics of each. Seen separately, you might not realize there’s much of a difference between. That said, these are very common character posters that lack an exuberance of subject that make many such designs sing. Fans of the original reboot may be more interested than those who aren’t.

(#5 below; #6 at right; #7-#8 below) The formal poster for the film, the sixth in the series, is now displayed at the right and is thus out of order with the below. The fifth design is an interesting exploration of the meaning of family through the guise of one of the film’s feature protagonists. It’s not much of a poster design, but it’s a simple and evocative one. The remaining three are variants of the same design, each carrying the gist of the film with a post-apocalyptic environment that should appease fans new and potential.

Trailer: B+

Review: Even if you didn’t catch the first film, this trailer may be enough to get you to buy your ticket and put the reboot into your DVD queue. It’s interesting, foretelling and most of all thrilling. That combination helps make the film seem like a natural evolution in the franchise and an exciting one at that.

Oscar Prospects:

The first film in the rebooted franchise secured a Best Visual Effects nomination, but nothing else. This, clearly more post-apocalyptic, may do better. Best Visual Effects is a given, but Best Production Design, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing should also be possibilities.
