The previous film opened to $74 million two years ago on its way to $234 million. It was the lowest tally both for the Wizarding World films, but also the lowest opening. That doesn’t mean that this second film will underperform as well. Although the new series is not based on books that were wildly popular, the first film might have been an opportunity to whet the appetites of Harry Potter fans who may just turn out in stronger numbers for the second film. Unfortunately, the second film of the Harry Potter series did underperform the original and came in well below. However, it was also the fourth best inflation-adjusted numbers of the series. I suspect this film will fall right around the same tally for opening weekend and possibly slightly higher for its full-run tally. There is no other competition for number one this year.

Wesley Lovell (WL): This universe is fascinating and the first film, while flawed, held some interesting potential. |

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s said to be a fine heist film with a twist on the genre and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. |

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a formulaic exploration of race in the Deep South, which could result in strong performances, but the film doesn’t look that enticing. |
