Every single Marvel Cinematic Universe entry has debuted at number one at the box office. Further, only three titles haven’t held the spot for at least two weeks (one of those returned to number one in its fourth weekend and stayed there for a record three more weeks). As such, there is no way that Doctor Strange doesn’t end up at number one. Of course, considering its competition, that seems like a foregone conclusion even without historical data. Trolls and its chipper style should easily fall in line in the second position, but Mel Gibson’s “return to grace” Hacksaw Ridge is the weekend’s big question mark. If it’s a box office hit, it will placate his fans and push the film into Oscar consideration. If it’s a bomb, there’s little hope for Gibson or his Oscar potential.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Even as someone who’s enjoyed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these are starting to feel like homework rather than entertainment. That said, it has some great actors in it, so it could be worth catching.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Comic book adaptation looks like a great popcorn flick.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am a little tired of Marvel films, but with star Benedict Cumberbatch and arresting visuals, this one looks like it will be better than usual.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Mel Gibson’s films are full of ego and I have yet to see one that I haven’t detested to its core. Considering the religious overtones of this film, the cast isn’t likely to improve my interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Mel Gibson’s war movie looks like it could put him back in favor.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It should be a good war picture, competently done, though I think it will be pretty obvious.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ll admit that Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake are making this seem like a pleasant diversion, but make no mistake, it still looks like it could be dreadful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strikes me as a fair to middling effort, but might be stronger than that.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I feel like I should see it, but it is hard to get excited by this animated film. It seems very much designed for young kids, and is just way too cute and colorful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): One of the most important Supreme Court cases in U.S. history promises compelling viewing, but early word is that it’s not that impressive.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Real life case study of Supreme Court case revolving around miscegenation looks to be a winner.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This indie about interracial marriage looks to be a winner. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton are supposed to be amazing.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Silly looking comedy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just looks like it is trying to hard too be both funny and have meaning. It just seems a little unbelievable.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The worst pre-predictive title I’ve ever seen. The trailer seems to solidify the idea that this is, indeed, a trash fire.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Appealing looking horror comedy with a dreadful title has nowhere to go but up.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’m not certain what to make of this trailer, but it looks like an unpleasant movie.
