There’s little competition over the Memorial Day weekend. There will probably be a three-peat for The Hitman’s Bodyguard on a dreary box office weekend. The lone new “wide” release is Tulip Fever, which is being dumped on Labor Day weekend where few films ever succeed.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film has been delayed so often that I wonder if it’s really any good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The bloom is probably off this long-delayed historical drama, but it might still be worth checking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a dry period drama, but a pretty one at least.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It should be an interesting take on old Dutch times, but it looks like it gets mired down in a love story that is not that original.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Claptrap and hogwash. That’s what the film looks like.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low-key family drama about an autistic boy and his recently widowed father is at least something different.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks a little too cloying of a film for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I like the visual way they try to show the autistic boy’s world, but the movie looks awfully saccharine.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There might be some funny stuff in the film, but the trailer doesn’t work for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dumb looking comedy will likely open and close without much notice.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks completely unfunny, but the Directed by William H. Macy credit has me intrigued.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This comedy about two female friends fighting over the same man looks truly terrible.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m most curious to see how this one turns out. It looks fascinating in certain respects.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Czech drama about a corrupt teacher in the last days of communist rule seems obvious.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a sharp satire.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks at a despotic teacher in 1983 Czechoslovakia could be an insightful view of the communist world at the time.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another supernatural horror film set in Asia where Americans are scared of the mystery of ancient supersititions. Not me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Japanese horror film looks more intriguing than its run-of-the-mill Hollywood counterparts.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like more non-sensical horror.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Another horror movie, this one set in Japan. Nothing about the trailer was very scary.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A cheap-looking action thriller.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Espionage drama with strong international cast with a low profile might be a near-miss.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a servicable but forgettable action film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A big name cast overacts like mad in what looks to be a not very exciting thriller.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m curious about this film from a historical perspective, but the delay in its release suggests perhaps it’s not that great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Historical epic about the end of the British Raj would probably be more successful as a TV miniseries, but looks ravishing.
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t know what to make of this film except that it doesn’t appeal to me at all.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This should be a stirring movie about the independence of India from the British Raj, but it looks too tame and then bogs down with a romance between two servants. It could have been much more.
