Every week, we’ll pose a new “five favorites” question. You just list your five favorites that fit in that category (preferably in preference order) and you’re welcome to discuss and debate the selections and see just how much you do or do not have in common with others.
Let’s turn our attention to the Oscars today and choose our surprise Oscar nominations
So, have at it. Which are your 5 Favorite Oscar Surprise Nominations?

1. Beauty And The Beast getting a nom for Best Picture
2. Babe getting a nom for Best Picture
3. Enya getting a nom for Best Original Song
4. Jacki Weaver getting a nom for Best Supporting Actress
5. Kate Winslet actually winning an Oscar
My 5 biggest surprises for the 2011 Academy Awards nominations;-
TEN nominations for True Grit including Best Director? Obviously the Academy LOVE the Coens and Bridges and Steinfeld succeeded in doing the media rounds. (sorry Mo’Nique – sometimes it is not JUST the performance but how much you promote your film).
Waiting for superman for being snubbed. didn’t it just win the PGA award for Best Documentary feature??? Proves yet again the Documentary branch doesn’t have a clue what it is doing.
Dianne Warren being snubbed – yet again. The Music Branch couldn’t even find it good enough to be the 5th nominee!!! The song is a big ballad and fits into the movie beautifully. Sure it wasn’t a great movie – but the song was great, Cher was great and it worked well in the movie!
Lesley Manville snubbed. I think she and Hailee Steinfeld were in trouble with which category they were being campaigned for. Obviously the Acting branch felt Hailee wasn’t the lead but Lesley was – or wasn’t.
The Animated feature category. Just because they had one less feature required to nominate more than 3 – worthy films like Tangled, Despicable Me and Legend of the Guardians were left out! Time to just expand it to 5 nominees and leave it at that. Same goes for Original Song AND Make Up Effects!!!
1. +++ Randy Newman winning for Original Song for Monster´s Inc. (I was sooooo happy that he finally won)
2. — Jurassic Park not getting nominated for Best Score ( This was my first soundtrack ever, and it is one of John Williams finest)
3. — Mulan not winning Best Score ( Jerry Goldsmith´s last chance for a long-deserved second Oscar with his great work for Mulan…I was so angry the mediocre Shakespeare in Love won)
4. — Shakespeare in Love winning over Private Ryan ( we will see if Weinstein can push King´s Speech this year like he did with Shakespeare in 1999)
5. — Amelie not winning Best Foreign Language Film ( For me, this was one of the biggest mistakes ever as it is one of the most wonderful and originial films I´ve ever seen.)
1. “In Bruges” getting a much-deserved Original Screenplay nomination
2. “Dreamgirls” not getting a Best Picture nomination
3. Eminem winning for “Lose Yourself”
4. Juliette Binoche winning for “The English Patient”
5. “Crash” winning Best Picture over “Brokeback Mountain” (Yeah, I went there.)
1) Almost Famous NOT being nominated for Best Picture (Chocolat? Really??)
2) The Aviator and Ray being picked over Closer and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3) Director: Christopher Nolan not being picked for Inception. The Oscars just love the Coen Brothers, don’t they?
4) Original Screenplay: to me it needs to be ORIGINAL, Michael Clayton was a decent movie, but a better dialouge than I’m Not There?
5) 2010: Ten nominations and no (500) Days of Summer, Blind Side (an okay movie, but Best Picture?) got in. At least (500) Days got a nom for Original Screenplay. Oh right, it didn’t.
Nolan is a genius, the Academy is trying to cover up with the 10 nominations rule, if they really wanted to give him credit, he would have been nominated for Director. And I will rather not mention Kate Hudson’s loss for Almost Famous.
But 500 Days and Almost Famous are in my collection and still two of my bests. I think it has enough fans not to have needed the Academy.
Sometimes I wonder which selection procedures Academy members follow…
Anyway, here my surprises:
1- My friend Anto Cannarozzi for best costumes (I am love). Vai Anto!!!!
2- Great Rick Baker for best make up (The Werewolf)
3- Algeria for best foreign film (Hors la loi)
4- Mike Leigh for best original screenplay (Another year)
5- Sylvain Chomet for best Animated Feauture ( L’Illusioniste)
1) Michelle Williams for best leading actress
2) Javier Bardem for best leading actor
3) The Illusionist Best Animated Film
4) Harry Potter for best art direction
5) The Tempest for best costume
I can only think of three surprises that I liked:
1. I had less faith in John Hawkes, but I’m really glad he was nominated. He deserved it.
2. Mark Ruffalo seemed like a sure bet, but I was still happy to see that. He’s good in almost everything.
3. The Wolfman for make-up; whether you liked the movie or not, the effects were pretty cool. And I wasn’t sure the Academy would nominate a film that so many people hated.
There weren’t a lot of surprises today. I had faith in John Hawkes, Hailee Steinfeld for supporting actress and Michelle Williams.
1. Mark Wahlberg not getting a nomination, but Javier Bardem did.
2. Alice in Wonderland not getting a nomination for makeup, which likely means it will go home empty-handed, and I’m very happy about that.
3. Hereafter for visual effects. It’s one of maybe 3 nominees I have yet to see, but that surprised me.
4. Another Year for screenplay; I love Mike Leigh.
5. Where did I Am Love come from for costume design?
