Although the Grammys are the only awards that are given out to music for movies, they are a wholly un-predictive set of nominations. Every. Year. In Best Music Film, which is would only really tie into the Documentary Feature category at the Oscars, has only one film (Long Strange Trip) that was submitted for Oscar consideration this year. None of the others were on the list this year or even last year. In Compilation Soundtrack, a category that doesn’t connect to any Oscar category, has three films from 2016 listed and two from 2017.

In the two categories that directly tie back to the Oscars, Original Score and Original Song, the Grammy cut-off of October 31 each year means that two months worth of music isn’t released and isn’t eligible from the current year while the prior years’ two months is. Thus, in Original Score, we have three films from 2016 on the list and one from 2017, Dunkirk, which is a likely Oscar nominee anyway, so it’s at least got 1-for-5. What about the fifth nominee? It’s a TV series, thus wholly ineligible. Original Song is a slightly better set, but not by much. Two of last year’s Oscar nominees are on the list (including the winner) along with a third 2016 film. Two 2017 songs are nominated, but neither has been heavily hyped for Oscar consideration, so once again, the Grammy nominations are interesting, but insignificant.
