Steven Spielberg’s drama The Post was the big winner from the National Board of Review. The film, which only recently had its embargo dropped, is shaping up to be the prominent political drama of the year and could be the eventual Best Picture winner, though the National Board of Review doesn’t have the best track record in that regard. Slumdog Millionaire, in 2008, was the last NBR Best Film winner to go on to the Oscar for Best Picture. No Country for Old Men the year before and American Beauty in 1999 were the only films in the last 20 years to duplicate the feat. That said, it serves as a prominent win and could bolster its chances at other critics awards. Streep, Hanks, Dafoe, and Metcalf are now all confirmed to be in the race for acting prizes. Matter of fact, there is only one winner in this bunch that doesn’t seem as assured of an Oscar nomination and that’s The Disaster Artist in Adapted Screenplay.
