We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

One of the biggest franchise in history is also one of the biggest at the Oscars. Nine films have been released since 1977 and every single one of them has been an Oscar nominee. While Episodes I, II, and III were poorly represented, every film has been nominated.

The only problem is that in terms of wins, the first and second films were the only one that won competitive Oscars. Every other film has lost everything they were nominated for. Return of the Jedi did manage to win a non-competitive special achievement award, but it lost all of its competitive nominations.

What does this mean for The Last Jedi? For certain it means that it will pick up a nomination. I suspect three, the sound awards and Best Visual Effects. Beyond that, it’s hopes are a bit faded as even the prior sets, the first films in each trilogy always nabbed significantly more nominations than the successive two films. A win would be incredibly unlikely.
